[edit] History

The school was granted specialist Sports College status in September, 2003.

The college has won many sports trophies and certificates.

[edit] Present

Since receiving official sports college status, the college has been extensively redeveloped and includes several new additions to the campus such as all-weather sports pitches, campus wide WLAN access points and improved facilities for current students.

Whilst the college specialises in sports courses and sports related science courses, the old Balby Carr School still functions as it did before 2003 with students from 11 - 18 years being able to continue to study as before, whilst at the same time, the college is able to offer more advanced courses to older students.

A City Learning Centre (CLC) is also located on the Balby Carr campus. This provides residents in the local area with free and paid for lessons in computer skills. The centre and also provides a day-care facility.

In 2006, the school ranked as one of the lowest in Doncaster for results for youngsters at age 16, with 19% gaining 5 or more GCSEs including maths and English[1]. This improved to 23% in 2007.[2] Following an OFSTED inspection in November 2005, the school was judged to require a 'Notice to Improve'. A subsequent inspection in January 2007 noted that "the school no longer requires significant improvement. The school is improving: it is now satisfactory in virtually all aspects of its work and provides satisfactory value for money."[3]

The school stages many productions, including a recent production (Feb 2007) of the musical The Little Shop of Horrors and Our day Out by Willy Russell [4]
