[edit] Name of article

The name is EBEL hockey league is absolutely wrong. We cannot have a redundant article title. It currently reads as the "Erste Bank Eishockey Liga" hockey league. The article should be known as either Erste Bank Eishockey Liga (the current naming rights) or Austrian Hockey League (the historical name). Flibirigit (talk) 20:37, 24 February 2008 (UTC)

I am going to open up a discussion for a requested move to Erste Bank Eishockey Liga to see if it has support. Flibirigit (talk) 21:10, 24 February 2008 (UTC)

Austrian Hockey LeagueErste Bank Eishockey Liga — This is the current league name as per naming rights. —Flibirigit (talk) 21:13, 24 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Survey

Feel free to state your position on the renaming proposal by beginning a new line in this section with *'''Support''' or *'''Oppose''', then sign your comment with ~~~~. Since polling is not a substitute for discussion, please explain your reasons, taking into account Wikipedia's naming conventions.
  • Support Name it Erste Bank Eishockey Liga then.

1. That is the official league name since 03/04 season.

2. There was one Slovenian team in the league in 06/07 season and there are three foreign teams in this year`s season.

Virenque (talk) 21:10, 24 February 2008 (UTC)

  • Support per use of SM-liiga, Elitserien, etc. Resolute 23:06, 24 February 2008 (UTC)
    • Good point on the naming rights issue. Resolute 21:23, 26 February 2008 (UTC)
  • Strong oppose. Naming conventions are to not include Sponsorship names, since they can change (even if this is 5 years old). See for example: Premier League (not Barclays Premier League), Football League Championship (not Coca-Cola Football League Championship), Football League One (not Coca-Cola Football League 1), Portuguese Liga (not BWINLIGA), Belgian League (not Jupiler League), and so on. Both SM-liiga and Elitserien are names without sponsors. Sebisthlm (talk) 23:24, 24 February 2008 (UTC)
  • Oppose per Sebisthlm. Talk about obfuscation of a subject in the title! Vegaswikian (talk) 03:53, 26 February 2008 (UTC)
  • Oppose per many, many precedents; for example all English, Scottish and Irish football leagues and cups. Agree with Sebisthlm. EJF (talk) 18:51, 26 February 2008 (UTC)
  • Oppose per everybody above who also opposed. Callmederek (talk) 20:22, 26 February 2008 (UTC)
  • Oppose. Having read the comments, I would have to disagree with using the naming rights as the article title. I also note that the Elite Ice Hockey League article does not include the bmibaby.com in its title either. Flibirigit (talk) 21:04, 26 February 2008 (UTC)

  • Support EBEL is a league which was established in 2002/03 season beside Austrian Hockey League, which was re-established after the end of Alpenliga in 1999/2000 season! Until 06/07 season there were just austrian clubs participating and 2 cups were given at the end of the season: one for EBEL and one for austrian championships. Since 06/07 season there are also Slovenian and Hungarian clubs participating in EBEL. If Olimpija wins EBEL finals this year, they will get an EBEL cup and became EBEL champions but NOT austrian champions. Austrian champion in this case would be the best austrian team, Salzburg, which would get JUST a cup for the Austrian champion. That`s why I think we need to rename this article to EBEL or both, to EBEL and Austrian Hockey League! Consider that you can not have Slovenian and Hungarian teams in Austrian Hockey League but in this article, you have. I am waiting for you to either move Austrian Hockey League to another article, or rename this article, because you can not confuse people with such a nonsense that non-austrian teams play in Austrian league. Virenque (talk) 21:59, 8 March 2008 (UTC)
I would suggest writing a properly cited paragraph into the current article to support your claims. You should mention that the league trophy is awarded to the league champion, and that there is another trophy for the Austrian champion. There is clearly precedence and consensus not to move this article, nor create an article named for a sponsor. Flibirigit (talk) 23:28, 8 March 2008 (UTC)
