The Australian National Commission for UNESCO was established in 1947 and is the Australian government organization responsible for advising on the implementation of UNESCO policies and programmes in Australia and for advising on Australia's involvement with UNESCO. The Commission comprises a Secretariat and seventeen (17) members, and is governed under the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization Act, 1947 (Cwlth) and the Commission's Rules of Procedure. In 2002, peace researcher Dr James Page suggested reform of the Commission, through revised legislation, a charter and widened membership, although to date no such reforms have not been instituted.
