Why is atrophy in the sense of loosing muscles taking place when one is dieting wrong, and how can it be prevented? --Abdull 22:08, 28 August 2006 (UTC)

- if you diet sufficiently that your daily caloric intake is less than the amount of calories your body uses in a day, then your body makes up the difference by taking it from various parts of your body, including muscles, and vital organs. your body may actually start making additional fat if it can since it thinks you are starving to death (which you technically are). by shrinking your muscles and organs, the body is also reducing your ability to be active, thereby forcing you to conserve more energy, which, like the fat production, it sees as a safety measure to prolong death from starvation. - the better way to go is to increase aerobic activity (most people get very little, or zero), and eat healthily (as opposed to less). this will increase metabolism, burn fat, strengthen organs, and give you energy. Sahuagin 15:44, 15 April 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Things to Change...
1 - 'Brain Atrophy' is listed but no explanation is given.
2 - 'Breast Atrophy' is listed but it also says "Atrophy of the testes occurs with prolonged use of enough exogenous sex steroid (either androgen or estrogen) to reduce gonadotropin secretion", which has nothing to do with the breasts. This phrase should be removed or the atrophy name changed.
This article needs more information in general.

- indeed. i think it should at least point out that not all muscle atrophy is necessarily abnormal. specifically, an athlete (IE: bodybuilder) that reduces his activity level will see a similar reduction in muscle mass over time. unless there is another term for this, but i'm fairly sure it is still considered atrophy.
