Contents

[edit] School population

The current school population is 1,197 students for the 20072008 school year. This population has been steadily increasing every year as a result of Burlington's continuous growth. In the summer of 2006, portables were added in order to deal with increasing enrollment. Assumption receives most new students from local elementary schools, including St. Raphael, St. Paul, St. Patrick, St. John, and Holy Rosary.

Assumption, like all publicly funded Catholic schools in Ontario, also accepts non-Catholics; however, they are expected to take part in the religious activities and mandatory religious classes.

The Catholic school's parishes are Holy Rosary, St. Raphael's, St. John's, and St. Patrick's. It belongs to the Diocese of Hamilton, under Bishop Anthony Tonnos.

As of next school year (2008–2009), Ascension and Assumption Grades 8–11 students will be transferred to the new Catholic high school, Corpus Christi.

[edit] School Construction and Portables

Assumption currently has six portables, which will be removed in summer 2008 due to the new Burlington high school. In the summer of 2007, Assumption reconstructed their gym and main halls. The school is currently petitioning the City Council to approve the Assumption Sports Field; the school should hear from the city in March.

[edit] Corpus Christi High School

As of September 2008, students in Grades 9 and 10 will be transferred to Corpus Christi if they came from Ascension. The projected population of Assumption is 950–1000.

[edit] Athletics

Assumption offers a wide variety of sports teams. The main rivalries for Assumption are with nearby Nelson High School and Notre Dame (Catholic). The football teams at Assumption have been quite successful. The senior crusaders of 2004–05 won the Halton & GHAC titles, but lost by one point in the Ontario Bowl vs. Crestwood. In the 2005–06 Halton football season, the Junior Crusaders finished as Ontario Bowl Champions behind the great strength and leadership of its offensive line. In the 2007–08 season, the senior team won the Halton Championships with a great quarterback and centre tandem.

[edit] Academics

The school offers academic programs for university-bound students, applied programs for college-bound students, and essential programs for the learning challenged; it also offers co-op apprenticeship and workplace programs in computer engineering and cosmetology. The school community prides itself on athletic achievements, and Assumption teams, known as the "Crusaders," are in a wide variety of sports (see below). Arts-related groups include a yearly school play and entries in the Sears Drama Festival.

[edit] Clubs

There are also many different clubs at Assumption, some of which include:

  • Student Council
  • Athletic Council
  • School Reach Trivia
  • Media Club
  • Environment Club
  • Peace and Justice Club
  • Art Club
  • Book Club
  • Eco-Book Club
  • Sports Teams
  • Trivia Night
  • Drama Club

[edit] Athletic Council

Assumption's Athletic Council replaces the school's cheerleaders. The council is run by students in all grades who want to participate; students can join the council in mid-September, before the school sports start.
