Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The University of the Pacific, Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry is a graduate school of dentistry located in the Pacific Heights area of the United States city of San Francisco. Since 1962 the school has been part of the University of the Pacific, a private university with its main campus in Stockton, California.
The school was founded in 1896 as the College of Physicians and Surgeons with programs in dentistry, medicine and pharmacy. In 1918, the college focused its education program solely on dentistry but retained its name as the College of Physicians and Surgeons until it was incorporated into the University of the Pacific. In 2004 the school was named after its long-time dean.[1]
The Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry is currently the only remaining institution in the United States accredited to teach an accelerated 3 year program leading to a DDS degree. Students complete a full continuum of pre-clinical and basic sciences classes in their first year of dental school, as opposed to years 1 and 2 at other universities, and have a compressed schedule of breaks, night-time clinic sessions and elective clinical rotations over the breaks. Despite the accelerated curriculum, students at the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry experience a number of hours of clinical education well above the national average for 4 year curricula.
