Arohana or Arohanam, in the context of North Indian Classical Music and South Indian Classical Music, is the ascending scale of notes in a raga. The pitch increases as we go up from Shadjam (Sa) to the Upper Stayi Shadjam (Sa).
For Example:
- Take Shankarabharanam Ragam (29th Mela) in the Melakarta Scheme.
The Arohana is as follows:
- S R2 G3 M1 P D2 N3 S
- Take Abhogi raga (22nd Mela Janyam-Kharapriya)
The Arohana is as follows
- S R2 G1 M1 D2 S
In this ragam certain notes are excluded so the raga is totally changed.
