- There had been a discussion back then about accounts named after nations, sparked by some controversial users such as User:Macedonia. Some people felt that having an account named after a country was generally a bad idea, especially when that country was associated with contentious political issues that create a lot of heat on Wikipedia, and the account name could be seen as inflammatory or partisan when used in the context of such a dispute. I think Pschemp in the end went round and blocked (or proactively created) account names for almost all countries in the world. Fut.Perf. ☼ 18:08, 17 April 2007 (UTC)
- P.S. You might want to read this the Offensive names section. TonyTheTiger (talk/cont/bio) 21:38, 17 April 2007 (UTC)
- The issue isn't being "inflammatory" or "partisan". Taking the name of a company or sovereign state is no-go because it can be misleading, suggesting the user is an official representative of that company or nation. This remains true no matter the political situation: a username like "Sweden" or "Denmark" might not be "inflammatory" or "partisan", but would still be off-limits as misleading. However, "Armenian" or "Armenian something" (like User:ArmenianPatriot) would be fine. Just not "ArmenianPresident" or "ArmenianPremier" or any other apparently official title. Does that make sense? -- Ben TALK/HIST 04:50, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

- As per Wikipedia:Requests_for_checkuser/Case/Artaxiad, the issue is probably moot anyway. If I understand that page correctly, this is a likely sock of banned user Artaxiad. Fut.Perf. ☼ 21:54, 21 April 2007 (UTC)
