"Apologize" is a song released by OneRepublic from their debut album Dreaming Out Loud. The vocalist and writer of the song is Ryan Tedder, the lead singer of the band. According to the band's MySpace site, the song "explores the personal pain of multiple relationships gone awry and the necessity of moving on." The song is the biggest radio airplay hit in the history of Top 40 radio in North America, racking up an astounding 10,693 spins in one week, breaking the previous record by 370 spins. The song has charted strongly around the world, reaching number one in 16 countries including; Australia, Austria, Germany, Italy, New Zealand, Sweden, Turkey, the Netherlands, and the United World Chart as well as staying at #1 for 8 consecutive weeks on Billboard's Pop 100. The song has also reached the U.S. and UK Top Three and has spent thirteen weeks at number one in Canada. The song spent 25 consecutive weeks (one week short of half a year) in the top ten of the Billboard Hot 100, the longest stay in the top ten for any song since "Smooth" by Santana featuring Rob Thomas stayed in the top ten of the chart for 30 weeks in 1999. "Apologize" is currently the most successful selling and charting song of the decade.[1] The song, according to SoundScan Data, is one of only two songs that have reached 3 million legal downloads in history.[2] "Apologize" has sold in excess of 6 million singles worldwide.

[edit] Music video
A new video associated with the remix was filmed on September 19, 2007 and released in early October.[3] The video had its premiere on UK music channel 'B4'. This version was shot in a recording studio where it shows Ryan Tedder singing in the studio and the other band members playing instruments to the music and scenes from a New Year's countdown party. In a third version of the video, also associated with the remix, Timbaland is shown remixing the song while the camera circles OneRepublic.[4]
The European version features clips of the film KeinOhrHasen, which stars Til Schweiger.
The video made its broadcast debut on VH1's Top 20 Countdown on October 27, 2007.
As of April 2008, "Apologize" the video of the remix version was the fourth most often viewed video on YouTube, with more than 52 million views, but the video has since been removed by the user in February 28 and the video is now gone from the most played list. Also, at the moment, the first music video is the 5th most watched in Youtube; with 56,670,541. Together, both music videos have had more than 108 million views.[citation needed]
[edit] Chart performance
"Apologize" has become a worldwide success, making it OneRepublic's breakout hit, and first #1. In the United States "Apologize" peaked at number-two on the Billboard Hot 100 for four non-consecutive weeks (spending other eleven weeks at number three and twenty-four weeks inside the top ten) and at number three for ten weeks on the Hot 100 Airplay, and became the third single from Shock Value to have topped the Billboard Pop 100. It has also become the album's first number one single on the Billboard Adult Top 40. It is also the second consecutive single from Shock Value to reach number one on U.S. Mainstream Top 40 radio. The song is also on its way to being a top 10 on the U.S. Rhythmic Radio chart, which would make OneRepublic one of the first "Rock" bands in history to have a Rhythmic top 10 hit.
In the United Kingdom, "Apologize" managed to climb to number-thirty-two based on digital downloads alone, and has since peaked at number three. The song ended 2007 as the years 16th biggest-selling single in the UK.[5]
In Australia the single debuted at #10 on the ARIA Singles Chart, and has since peaked at #1 for eight consecutive weeks, and has been certified 2x Platinum by ARIA.[6][7] It is now the #1 most downloaded single of all time in Australia and New Zealand. The song has reached #1 on both the Canadian Hot 100 and New Zealand RIANZ Chart. It is the first #1 from Shock Value in New Zealand's RIANZ Chart and has been certified platinum, It has been running 7 weeks consecutively. Fourth consecutive #1 in the Canadian Hot 100, where it spent an impressive 13 consecutive weeks atop the chart.
In addition it is the first number one from Shock Value on the United World Chart, where it had one of the longest runs at the top in the history of that chart, spending fourteen non-consecutive weeks at #1, (eleven of which were consecutive), before finally being dethroned by Rihanna's "Don't Stop the Music". With that, it was the 2007 Christmas and New Year number one. It has currently gained 10.132.000 points[1] on the United World Chart, and has been certified 5x Platinum. This makes it the second most successful single worldwide since the United World Chart began. It had the longest stay (14 weeks) at number one for any song behind Shakira's "Hips Don't Lie" (16 weeks) and Cher's "Believe" (15 weeks) and Madonna's "Hung Up" (15 weeks).
On Billboard's official European Hot 100 chart the song "debuted" at #16, making it the highest debut chart position of any new act in the history of the chart. In the 2nd week on the European Hot 100 it had entered the top 10.
The song was #4 on VH1e Top 10 Biggest Hits of 2007.
The song bounced back in the iTunes top 100 songs charts on May 22, 2008, after the band performed it in the finale of American Idol Season 7 with David Archuleta.
It did well on TRL, and was retired at #4 on Thursday 24 January, 2008, after 35 days on the countdown.
