"Angel Eyes" is a song written by John Hiatt and Fred Koller, produced by Greg Ladanyi for The Jeff Healey Band's first album See the Light (1988). It was first released as the album's second single in June 1989 (see 1989 in music) and peaked at number five on the Billboard Hot 100 and twenty-four on the Billboard 's Mainstream Rock Tracks. It was later covered by Australian Idol series one contestant Paulini and became her first number-one single in Australia.

The song debuted on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 on June 17, 1989 at number eighty-five.[1] It took a few weeks to rise but it eventually peaked at number five on the Billboard Hot 100 spending twenty-two weeks in it.[1] It was also the seventieth highest selling single in the U.S. for 1989.[2] The song was also used in the 1989 film Roadhouse. John Hiatt's own version of the song finally appeared on his 1994 live album "Hiatt Comes Alive At Budokan". A studio version of the song was included on the 1998 "The Best of John Hiatt".

Paulini's version was produced by Audius Mtawarira for her first album, One Determined Heart (2004), and it was released as the album's first single in Australia on July 2, 2004 (see 2004 in music). Paulini states "Angel Eyes" is an amazing song. Audius came up with some great ideas and we did it and it worked. All the instruments are live. It's turned out to be one of the best songs."[3] The CD single featured the song and two remixes, one by Tony Buchen, and one by Rick Will (Ben Harper, No Doubt, Incubus).

The music video was filmed on June 15 to June 23, 2004 in Sydney, Australia and was a simple video showing Paulini as rising young star, hitting the stage to perform and living out her dreams.[4] It also features Paulini's fans in the audience at the end of the video, as Sony BMG held a competition.[4] The video opens up to Paulini walking down a foot path and then walking into a stage. The video then shows Paulini walking around behind the stage before proceeding out and singing to an audience of clapping fans, then ending the video.

The song became the most added song to Australian radio from the week June 19, 2004 and Paulini helped promote the song by touring with Australian band Human Nature.[5] She also made appearances in record stores in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane and also performed on Rove Live.[6] The song made its debut at number two on the Australian ARIA Singles Chart on July 12, 2004. It initially debuted at number-one until ARIA discovered that a Sydney DJ had bought one hundred copies in one transaction, disqualifying ninety-nine unit sales and bumping her out of the top spot, making fellow Australian Idol contestant Shannon Noll's song "Learn to Fly" number-one. A week later the song officially reached number-one on July 19, 2004 and stayed their for three consecutive weeks. "Angel Eyes" was certified platinum by ARIA, was the seventeenth highest selling single in Australia for 2004 and spent twenty-six weeks in the top one hundred.[7]
