[edit] Spielberg
- Richard Schickel (interviewer). (2007-07-09). Spielberg on Spielberg. Turner Classic Movies.
This video verifies Spielberg's themes of communication, in tune with his theme of tolerance (if we can talk to aliens in CE3K, why not with the Reds in the Cold War?). Steven said he prefers foreign lang interviews because he can make more profound answers by observing body language when translators speak. See "Phone home" in E.T., Colour Purple, Terminal, Amistad ("Stand up!") et al. for examples in film.
Also, he considers Empire to be his most profound film about loss of innocence, he was scared whether Raiders or Ryan gave their all in the openings alone, we're meant to believe Schindler doesn't care for his workers in the bit where he confronts Goth after the liquidation, Stern is Schindler's only ever honest friendship, and rubbishes those who thought Kubrick was going to end A.I with the blue fairy underwater. His two collaborations with Tom Cruise reflect post-9/11 fears, Minority Report in particular questioning how much power we give to the gov for hope of protection.

- "Jurassic Park had been a significant experience for Richard Attenborough, as well. Not only had it ended an informal retirement from acting - at least temporarily - the film had been the long awaited opportunity to work with a director whose work he held in the highest regard. "Frankly, the year my film, Gandhi, was up against Steven's E.T., I was certain that not only would E.T. win, but that it should win. It was inventive, powerful, wonderful. I make more mundane movies. There are stories that interest me, and I use cinema to tell them. But Steven makes movies because they are movies - and does so magically. When the history of cinema is written over these decades, Steven Spielberg will be heralded as an innovative, exciting, blistering talent." Don Shay; Jody Duncan (1993).
