[edit] Arrest

After more than a month of intense national and regional media coverage and speculation, Kreider was arrested when his father, Timothy Scot Kreider, informed authorities that his son had confessed to the killings two days earlier.[2] Police said Kreider was a friend of victim Kevin Haines, 16, a fellow sophomore at Manheim Township High School, and entered the home with the intention of smothering him, but ended up using a knife to kill Kevin and his parents.[3] Kreider will be tried as an adult, and is being held in the Lancaster County Prison without bail, although his age prevents him from being sentenced to death due to a U.S. Supreme Court ruling.[4]

[edit] Background of Killings

The victims, including parents Thomas Alan Haines, age 50, and Lisa Ann Haines, age 47, were found on May 12 at their house in Manheim Township after their daughter Maggie, a student at Bucknell University, was awakened by a noise in the middle of the night and was told by her mother to go for assistance. There were no signs of forced entry, and nothing was missing from the house.[5] Alec and Kevin were in the same German class and were reported by a fellow student to be "close buddies", and Alec attended the family's memorial service on May 19.
