...that Fort Vermilion was established in 1788, being considered the oldest European settlement in Alberta? It was, at the time, a trading community for the North West Company, which also established Fort Chipewyan the same year. Hudson's Bay Company took over the fort in 1821, when the two companies merged. Today, Fort Vermilion is listed as a national historic site of Canada.

...that Banff National Park is Canada's oldest national park and the second oldest in North America, after Yellowstone National Park? It was established in 1885 under the name Rocky Mountains Park, around the Cave and Basin hot springs, then expanded two years later. It is one of the world's most popular national parks, with 3,927,557 visitors in the 2004/05 season.

Princess Louise Caroline Alberta

...Alberta is named after Princess Louise Caroline Alberta, Marchioness of Lorne and Duchess of Argyll (1848–1939), the fourth daughter of Queen Victoria. Princess Louise was the wife of John Douglas Sutherland Campbell, 9th Duke of Argyll, Governor General of Canada from 1878 to 1883.

Lake Louise, the village of Caroline, and Mount Alberta were also named in honour of Princess Louise. A street in Calgary was named after her husband, the Marquess of Lorne.

Banff Springs Hotel in 1929

...that the Banff Springs Hotel was the second Grand railway hotel to be built by the Canadian Pacific Railway? Its opening in June 1, 1888 was preceded by that of Hotel Vancouver by two weeks. The third Grand Hotel was the equally iconic Château Frontenac in Quebec City, which opened five years later, in 1893. The hotels were built to expose Canada's beauties to tourists, and create business for the expanding railway companies.
