[edit] Southern Connecticut State University

Another user put the "advert" template on this page stating that it read like an advertisement. Probably 90% of the time when I see this template, there is copyright infringement, usually because a user takes text and changes it slightly. At this time all I did was take selections from the Wiki article and did a google search and this Conntact article popped up. I didn't have enough time to check the school's own website, which admittedly is a mistake. Since it seems the text was "pulled from the school's website," it is still a copyright infringement and needs to be rewritten so as to avoid plagiarism.Rpgman456 15:27, 9 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Westport restoration of links

Hi, I saw you restored links at the bottom of the Westport article. While I completely agree with you that those links should be there, I want to warn you that there's a nasty Wikipedia rule about so-called "spam" that says NO links can be put in an article unless the subject of the link is essentially equivalent to the subject of the article -- that is, a link from the "Westport" article could only go to a web page about Westport as a whole. It's ridiculous, especially in the context of articles about localities, but it exists. So far, the very aggressive group at WP:External links hasn't attacked articles about localities, but one day it might happen. In another locality, I'm slowly replacing a long external links section with text mentioning important institutions in town and using the footnotes for the links, which isn't as easy for the reader but which may avoid a future fight. Just FYI. Noroton 15:33, 2 May 2007 (UTC)

I have a feeling that this is going to be a long, hard fight - I've re-edited the page and external links yet again. I refer others, once again, to WP:External_links. The links are, in fact, relevant. Please find something else about the towns page to gripe about, ok? ;)

[edit] Westport External Links

I've reverted your edit. Editors have already reached a consensus on the links for that article. The aim of Wikipedia is not to include every link that residents of a town could use. Many are irrelevant and are considered spam. Please do not revert them any more, if you do, I will contact an administrator to arbitrate. For future reference, check the talk page first.-DMCer 17:56, 7 September 2007 (UTC)

You might use New York City as an example of an appropriate links section. It doesn't list any Broadway theaters, men's/women's clubs, or historical societies for a reason, and of courses, it has many more venues than Westport.-DMCer 18:03, 7 September 2007 (UTC)

I hope you both will consider ways you might reach a compromise. As I look over WP:External links it seems somewhat flexible, and in practice a lot of municipality articles tend to have a broader approach to external links. If a section of the article covers a topic, then a link to some Web page that covers the same topic would be appropriate, I think (so the town Education Department deserves a link). Many links could go into footnotes, which is not as easy for the reader, but is obviously within policy. for the Darien, Connecticut article, I converted a long list of links on community groups into a section listing and describing community groups, with each one footnoted. That might be part of a solution here. Why not try for a consensus? Noroton 18:54, 7 September 2007 (UTC)

(I see up higher on this page that I've mentioned some of this before. Either the External links policy has changed a bit or I'm reading it a bit differently, but I think you've got some leeway if the list isn't too long. Seriously, I'd go for a compromise if you can. Just my 2 cents. Noroton 18:57, 7 September 2007 (UTC))
