Pokemon: Advanced Generation (ポケットモンスター アドバンスジェネレーション?) is the anime series which follows Ash Ketchum through his trials and tribulations in the Hoenn region. Pokémon: Advanced Generation is the continuation of the Pokémon: The Animated Series, with the premise of “A Brand New Start”. The anime was in correspondence to the Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire games showcasing the various Pokémon and locations in the Hoenn region. The anime saw the departure of fan favorite Misty, but the addition of not only May, but her brother Max as well. While Ash Ketchum was to continue on his journey to become a Pokémon Master, May wanted to compete in Pokémon Contests. The Advanced Generation series saw the arrival of new and old villains alike, the Hoenn League Championships, and the Pokémon Battle Frontier.

[edit] Plot Synopsis

Ash Ketchum, from Pallet Town, journeys to a new land to face new challenges and new Pokémon. Ash dreams of becoming a Pokémon Master, in doing so he must collect 8 of the local Hoenn Gym Leader Badges in order to enter the Hoenn League. Joining Ash on his journey are Brock, Max, and May. Brock,from Pewter City Gym and Ash’s longtime travel companion, dreams of becoming the greatest Pokémon Breeder. May, a coordinator, travels with Ash in hopes of competing in contests and winning ribbons.Along with her brother max who is like a walking encyclopedia.The group of kids travel across Hoenn.

The main characters are the set of our young heroes who travel the Hoenn region.

  • Ash Ketchum / Satoshi: The hero of the Pokémon show. Ash Ketchum has all the qualities one can look for in a hero; Brave, Heroic, and Loyal. While Ash at times tends to be a bit headstrong, his intentions are true, and his love for Pokémon is unrivaled. Ash has a dream to become the greatest Pokémon Master ever. His Pokémon journey to Hoenn will test his strength, and determination in continuing his Pokémon Master journey.
  • Pikachu: In the Pokémon anime, Pikachu was Ash Ketchum's first Pokémon. Pikachu will journey with Ash to the Hoenn region, as he aids his friend in his dream of becoming a Pokémon Master.
  • May / Haruka: A coordinator who is starting out on her Pokémon journey. During her journey she will meet the various troubles and joys it takes in becoming a great Pokémon trainer. She dreams of competing in contests, showcasing her skill and love that she shares with her Pokémon.
  • Max / Masato: May’s younger and inexpereinced brother. Max wants to become a Pokémon trainer, but travels with Ash and May to learn the odds and ends of Pokémon. He shows that he is essential to the groups many times with the aid of his PokeNav, guiding them when more oft than times they are lost. Max has a big heart, and shows the he has what it takes to one day become a great Pokémon trainer.
  • Brock / Takeshi: Former Gym Leader of the Pewter City Gym who is on a quest to become a Pokémon breeder. Brock, while a bit over ambitious with women, has a true heart of that of friend, and stands side by side with Ash on his journey to become a Pokémon Master.

[edit] Secondary Characters

  • Professor Birch: is the resident Pokémon Professor of Littleroot Town and Hoenn, and also works in his lab in Littleroot Town. He is first referred at the end of the Silver Conference, when Harrison tells Ash about Hoenn. He first makes an actual appearance in the first Pokémon: Advanced Generation episode, and is the one to give May her first Pokémon, Torchic. He turns up at various points in the Hoenn saga doing field work. He is also notorious for his reckless driving.*
  • Misty / Kasumi: The heroine in the original series. Misty makes her return various times within the Pokémon: Advanced Generation series. Namely when she releases her Togetic to the wild, and when she accompanies the group near Cerulean City.
  • Drew / Shu: Drew is a Pokémon Coordinator and one of May's greatest rivals. Drew’s skills have been a continuing inspiration for May to better herself as a coordinator, which is the basis of their rivalry. In the Hoenn Grand Festival, Drew defeats May in the quarterfinals, but loses to the defending champion Robert in the final round. Later, at the Kanto Grand Festival, he is defeated by May in the quarterfinals. He owns five Pokémon, Roselia, Masquerain, Flygon, Absol, and Butterfree. Drew is currently traveling to the Johto region to participate in the Johto Pokémon Contests.
  • Solidad / Saori: A rival to both Drew and May. She has more experience than them, and beat May in the finale of the Kanto Grand Festival. Solidad owns a Lapras, a Slowbro, a Butterfree, and a Pidgeot.
  • Delia Ketchum: Ash's mom.
  • Tracey Sketchit: accompanied Ash in the Orange Islands and parts of Johto. Currently Prof. Oak's assistiant.
  • Harley: A Pokémon Coordinator who is considered one of May's rivals. He dresses up to resemble a Cacturne. He uses dirty tricks in order to get his opponents off balance. Harley owns a Cacturne, a Banette, an Ariados, an Octillery and a Wigglytuff. Harley is currently traveling to the Johto region to participate in the Johto Pokémon Contests.
  • Scott: Scott, first appeared in The Scheme Team. After observing Ash's battle against Agatha, Scott recommended that Ash go to the Battle Frontier. He next appeared in Numero Uno Articuno to observe Ash's battle against Noland. Since then, Scott has appeared at every battle facility to observe Ash battle against that Frontier Brain.
  • Morrison / Masamune: Morrison is a Pokemon trainer, who met Ash while he was training for the Hoenn League. Morrison is a very kind individual, but is over endulgent in regards to food. When he met Ash, the two had a harsh rivalry, each always trying to outdo one another. The soon quickly became friends, and soon ended up battling in the Hoenn League. Morrison owns a Beldum (which evolves into Metang), a Gligar, a Growlithe, a Swampert, a Steelix, and a Girafarig.
  • Tyson / Tetsuya: A Pokémon trainer whom Ash befriends at the Ever Grande Conference. Tyson owns a Sceptile, a Metagross, a Donphan, a Shiftry, a Hariyama, and a Meowth which resembles Puss in Boots. Tyson defeats Ash in the Hoenn League championship, and goes on to win the entire tournament.
  • Vivian and Lilian: They are present at Pokémon contests in Hoenn and Kanto, as reps for the contest.

[edit] Team Rocket

An evil organization run by the ruthless Giovanni. The goals and ambitions of Team Rocket are to rule the world by the exploitation and manipulation of Pokémon. Team Rocket is not essentially active in the Hoenn region, however the boss deploys two of organizations members to take down rival teams Magma and Aqua.

  • Jessie: Vain and strong willed, Jessie shows that she is someone not to mess with. With a lonely past and tough upbringing, Jessie has the strength and determination of one who is an independent woman. Her credentials in Team Rocket are ones that aren’t to be overlooked, however time and time again Jessie has failed in achieving various missions; namely that of capturing Pikachu. Jessie, James and Meowth have been assigned to the Hoenn region to collect information on rival Team Aqua and Team Magma.
  • James: Like his partner Jessie, James is a vain individual. However, the difference with James is that he exposes a more sensitive side to his character. Coming from a stable and rich family, James decided early on that the lifestyle of wealth wasn’t for him, thus deserting his family only to find himself in Team Rocket. Jessie, James and Meowth have been assigned to the Hoenn region to collect information on rival Team Aqua and Team Magma.
  • Meowth: Sassy, quick witted, and determined are the only three ways to describe Meowth. The talking Pokémon, Meowth, has his start in the lonely streets of Hollywood. However, when Meowth decided to pursue his dreams of wealth and fame, he joined with said organization Team Rocket. Jessie, James and Meowth have been assigned to the Hoenn region to collect information on rival Team Aqua and Team Magma.
  • Cassidy is also a member of Team Rocket and her partner is Butch. She is a huge rival of Jessie's and is a childhood friend of hers.
  • Butch is also a member of Team Rocket and is Cassidy's partner.

Team Magma is one of the villainous teams to be found in Hoenn. Team Magma's goal is to raise and expand the landmasses of the world with the power of Groudon. The leader of Team Magma is Maxie.

Team Aqua is one of the villainous teams to be found in Hoenn. They intend to raise the level of the oceans by using the power of Kyogre. Team Aqua's leader is Archie.

[edit] Hoenn Gym Leaders

The standard 8 Gym Leaders of the Hoenn region are one of the toughest group yet. Throughout the Hoenn saga, Ash Ketchum will go toe to toe with some of the toughest trainers in all of Hoenn to battle his way to collect the 8 Gym Badges. Only then can Ash move on to the Hoenn League Champinoship.

  • Roxanne: Roxanne is the Gym Leader of the Rustboro City Gym. Trainers who defeat her receive the Stonebadge. She is a scholar who specializes in Rock-type Pokémon. Ash battled Roxanne at the Gym while being filmed by some of Roxanne's students. Ash's Pikachu was able to defeat both of her Pokémon through a combination of pure electrical power and the Iron Tail technique, taking Roxanne by surprise.
  • Brawly: Brawly is the Gym Leader of the Dewford Town Gym. Trainers who defeat him receive the Knucklebadge. He is a young man who specializes in Fighting-type Pokémon. After seeing Ash's battle against his star pupil, Brawly agreed to a rematch in a private arena- a wave-swept islet off the coast of Dewford.
  • Wattson: Wattson is the Gym Leader of the Mauville City Gym. Trainers who defeat him receive the Dynamobadge. He is a jolly old man who specializes in Electric-type Pokémon. One of Wattson's tricks was a robotic Raikou that ended up super-charging the electricity in Pikachu. As a result, Ash's Pikachu was able to completely wipe out Wattson's team on its own, using a series of super-powerful Thunderbolts.
  • Flannery: Flannery is the Hoenn region Gym Leader of the hot springs Gym in Lavaridge Town. She specializes in Fire-type Pokémon and gives out the Heatbadge when defeated. Ash has his Lavaridge Gym battle. In the battle, he uses his Corphish, Pikachu and Treecko. Despite Corphish being hit by a Yawn from Flannery's Slugma, Ash manages to defeat Torkoal and win the Heat Badge.
  • Norman: Norman is the Gym Leader of the Petalburg City Gym. He is an expert of Normal-type Pokémon, and hands out the Balancebadge to Pokémon trainers who defeat him. Using his Grovyle, Pikachu, and Torkoal, Ash defeated Norman's Pokémon, much to Max's dismay. Max stole the Balance Badge and locked himself up in Norman's greenhouse. Norman was able to get Max under control and give Ash his Balance Badge.
  • Winona: Winona is the Gym Leader of the Fortree City Gym. She specializes in Flying-type Pokémon and gives out the Featherbadge when beaten. Winona used Altaria, Pelipper and a "shiny" Swellow against Ash's Grovyle, Pikachu and his own Swellow. After a long (and, surprisingly, Team Rocket-less) battle, Ash won the Feather Badge from her.
  • Liza & Tate: Liza & Tate are the Gym Leaders of the Mossdeep City Gym. They specialize in Psychic-type Pokémon. They give the Mindbadge to challengers who defeat them. Tate and Liza's father owns the Mosdeep Space Centre and often goes into space to search for space Pokémon. This means that they often spend time at the Space Centre, and even have battles in zero-gravity.
  • Juan: Juan is the Gym Leader of the Sootopolis City Gym in Pokémon Emerald. He replaced Wallace, his (former) student, who in Emerald was moved up to the position of League Champion, replacing Steven. He gives the Rainbadge to those who defeat him. Juan trains Water-type Pokémon, and is quite the celebrity in anime Sootopolis, putting on shows with his Pokémon. In an intense battle, Ash managed to only marginally defeated Juan for his Rainbadge.

[edit] Frontier Brains

The Frontier Brains, are the leaders of the Battle Frontier Symbol Challenge.

  • Noland: Noland is the Frontier Brain in charge of the Battle Frontier's Battle Factory. He instructs others that just reading isn't enough to learn about Pokémon, instead a trainer must gain experience. He battles with rental Pokémon the same as any trainer in the Battle Factory, and awards the Knowledge Symbol onto the Frontier Pass of trainers who defeat him.
  • Greta: Greta is the Frontier Brain and leader of the Battle Frontier's Battle Arena. Greta can be blunt, and if an opponent looks weak, she'll let them know. She likes tough trainers, and will gladly hand over the Guts Symbol if defeated.
  • Tucker: Tucker is the Frontier Brain and commissioner of the Battle Frontier's Frontier Dome. Tucker is a superstar and enjoys the sound of a crowd chanting his name. He prefaces battles with narcissistic comments, and if he loses, turns over the Tactics Symbol to the trainer's Frontier Pass.
  • Lucy: Lucy is the Frontier Brain and law-keeper of the Battle Frontier's Battle Pike. Lucy trampled flowers and braved storms to reach her position. She isn't one for idle chatter, preferring to go right into battle. When she's defeated, she prefers her opponent to hurry and move along. The Luck Symbol is awarded to those able to defeat Lucy's Pokémon.
  • Spenser: Spenser is the Frontier Brain and master of the Battle Frontier's Battle Palace. Spenser's physical being and heart beat as one with his Pokémon, his brethren. He has full trust in his Pokémon. He makes loud threats to set his opponent off guard. When defeated, he awards the Spirits Symbol.
  • Anabel: Anabel is the Frontier Brain in charge of running the Battle Frontier's Battle Tower. When defeated, she awards the Ability Symbol onto the Frontier Pass.
  • Brandon: Brandon is the Frontier Brain and chief of the Battle Frontier's Battle Pyramid. Any trainer arriving at the top of the pyramid just after Brandon must battle this Pyramid King for the status of the pyramid's conqueror. Brandon appreciates the grand life of the explorer. He recalls the passion, danger, and desperation of his death-defying and life-affirming adventures. When defeated in battle, he'll praise the grandness of the match and hand over the Brave Symbol.

During the course of their Hoenn adventure, Ash and May run across a variety of rival trainers. The trainers are often of a friendly nature, however that does not stop the competing nature of the rivalry. The Hoenn rivals are some of the richest character driven rivals, and have some of the most memorable Pokemon Anime personas.

Like the Pokémon series, Pokémon: Advance Generation enjoyed 4 full length films. Like before, the films relied on the story telling of legendary Pokémon, and the promotion of upcoming Pokémon, such as those in Pokémon Diamond & Pearl. With each Pokémon film raking up hefty sales not only in the box office (Japan), but on DVDs, there is no doubt that the Pokémon films will continue on throughout the generations! Listed below are the four featured length films, with a brief plotline analysis.

[edit] Jirachi: Wishmaker

While Ash and his friends are at a carnival celebrating the appearance of the Millennium Comet, they befriend Jirachi, a Pokémon that awakens every thousand years alongside the comet. Of the trainers, it is Max who Jirachi becomes friendly with. However a former Team Magma scientist, working as a magician at the carnival, wishes to use Jirachi to bring forth Groudon.

Meanwhile, in celebration of the Millennium Comet appearance, Ash Ketchum and company arrive at a festival where May buys a seven-panelled novelty that is said to grant a person one wish if a panel is closed for each night the comet appears. When Ash and Max accidentally volunteer for one of Butler's magic tricks, Max is introduced to Jirachi, who takes a liking to the main four.

[edit] Destiny Deoxys

A giant meteorite from space strikes in the Arctic. Arising from the crash-site is a Pokémon known as Deoxys. Feeling threatened, Rayquaza starts to attack the Pokémon while it was trying to revive a stone. The fight ends, however, when Rayquaza fires a point blank range Hyper Beam, vaporizing Deoxys except for its crystal core, which fell deep into the waters. The research team led by Professor Lund, whose camp was in the middle of the battle, takes the stone Deoxys was holding, and bring it with them on their return to La Rousse city.

Four years later, Ash and his friends arrive at La Rousse city, intent on battling in the city's famed Battle Tower. There, they run into Tory, the son of Professor Lund, who became afraid of Pokémon after being caught in the middle of a Walrein and Sealeo stampede caused by the meteor strike four years ago.

[edit] Lucario and the Mystery of Mew

Hundreds of years ago, there was a large battle between Pokémon parties: Red and Green. In the present, in a small town named Rota, a yearly celebration is held commemorating this great battle. Ash, May, Brock and Max happen to come to this town during this time, and participate in a battle to decide who will be the "Hero of the Year." Ash and Pikachu win, but Mew snatches Pikachu and takes him to a mysterious tree-like structure, from which point the adventure unfolds.

At the festival, Ash competes in a tournament at Camaron Palace and wins, to become the "Aura Guardian" for that year. As part of the celebration, Ash is granted Aaron's staff, which contains his Pokémon companion, Lucario, whom Aaron had sealed before stopping the war. However, Pikachu is taken away by Mew when an adventurer named Kid attempts to put a tracker on the legendary Pokémon. Naturally Ash, with the help of Lucario, follows Mew to the Tree of Beginning in order to rescue Pikachu.

Ash and Pikachu are lost in a wasteland and meet the star of the underwater Pokémon show, Hiromi. Hiromi is a descendant of a race of people who are able to communicate with the Water Pokémon, called the people of the water. They have a legend: somewhere in the oceans of the world is the Akūsha temple of the ocean, and in it is hidden a treasure called the crown of the ocean . However, no one has ever seen it.

Then, the Pokémon ranger Jack Walker, nicknamed Jackie, appears. Jackie is on a top-secret mission: to protect the egg of the prince of the sea Manaphy, and to deliver it to the temple of the ocean. Hiromi and Ash assist him in his mission and join him in his journey.

Suddenly, the pirate Phantom, who wants the egg, attacks them. Phantom plans to conquer the world using the power of the crown of the ocean, but it seems that Manaphy is needed to understand the mystery of the treasure. Then, when the hand of the high-tech mecha Phantom is piloting draws near the egg glows brilliantly, and Manaphy hatches.
