[edit] Name

There are no English, Catalonian, Baden-Württemberg, Quebec or Victorian Grands Prix for example. Does anybody have a reference to why this GP supposedly will be named for a subnational entity? /Kriko (talk) 14:11, 3 February 2008 (UTC)

I couldn't find a reference, but my guess is that the intention behind the name is a desire by the Abu Dhabi government (who are making the investment) to promote their own city/emirate, rather than the UAE as a whole. (And with my cynical hat on, calling this race the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix wouldn't prevent there being a Dubai Grand Prix if the Dubai government decided to throw some $ in Bernie's direction...) Yep. That's kind of my thoughts too. I guess we'll have to see how things turn out, and if any proper references will turn up once the race is officially announced on the calendar. Afaik, the Catalan government are quite heavily invested in the GP at Barcelona, and with the European GP in Spain, it wouldn't be surprising if Catalonia would want to follow the Abu Dhabi example to promote themselves rather than Spain. /Kriko (talk) 20:13, 4 February 2008 (UTC)
