The Autoroute A16, is also known as the L'Européenne and forms part of the larger autoroute des estuaires, is an autoroute in North-West France.
The motorway starts at L'Isle-Adam in Île-de-France and ends at the Belgium frontier near Bray-Dunes. The A16 was built in the 1990s to relieve the congested RN1 between Paris and the Côte d'Opale (Boulogne-sur-Mer, Calais). The A16 is operated by the Société des Autoroutes du Nord et de l'Est de la France. The motorway is 319 km (198 miles) in length.
The A16 serves Beauvais, Amiens, Abbeville in Picardie, Boulogne, Calais et Dunkirk in Nord-Pas-de-Calais. It is parallel to the English Channel then to the North Sea.
Between L'Isle-Adam and Boulogne-sur-Mer, it is operated by the Sanef and is tolled. Between Boulogne and Belgium, it is the Direction Départementale de l'Équipement (DDE) that operates the A16 and which does not impose a toll.

[edit] Future extensions
It is projected to extend the A16 south to the Francilienne, the outer Parisian ringroad. Studies were meant to be finalised in Spring 2006.
Public enquiry will take place during the end of the year 2006. The objective is to begin construction of the extension in 2009 and to open the new extension in 2012. This new 8.5 km (5.2 mile) long section wil be operated by the SANEF.
