If the article doesn't mention that he has more awards than any other player, or doesn't give it enough prominence, feel free to mention that. However, skill is subjective, and we can't unequivocally say that someone is the best ever. 'Considered by many' gets the point across as best we can while sticking to the known facts.
Thanks for taking the time to discuss your changes, but I do have to warn you that if you make the same edit a fourth time you will be blocked under the three revert rule. But feel free to go to the article's talk page and discuss your version of the introduction there.
