[edit] Baltimore City College WikiProject

Thank you for your input on the Ara Person's discussion. If you have not yet read the discussion page, then I want to inform you that I am not going to remove him from the list of notables. I was also wondering if you would be interested in joining the Baltimore City College WikiProject. If you are, then just visit the project's site and add your name to list of participants. I would be appreciative of any help you wish to provide. Thanks. Golem88991 03:46, 29 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] STOP SAYING I'M VANDALIZING THE PAGE

The stuff I put on the BCC page was pure fact and nothing more, and it is notable enough to be included in the article, and there's no reason why it shouldn't. Quit reverting my edits, unless you plan to bring an administrator into it.Thx2005 00:09, 13 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Info Box Change

Ur right the i should have consulted the discussion I was attempting to make the City info box consistent with all secondary schools I do believe that trumps the BCPSS project.

Also I have to questions or ideas regarding the page 1) I have been reading a lot of old literature specifically reports to the Board of Commissioners from the 1890's they refered to City thru out while it is no longer in use that does not provide reason to exclude it from use and it wouldnt be a bad tradition to reestablish

2)I think we need a new image or seal for the info box. Which do u prefer?

Your note above isn't quite clear about what was referred to in the 1890's. Are saying the school was referred to as "the College"? If so, then I would simply say that reference should go in the history section of the page. The opening paragraph seems to be telling the readers what the school is currently called.
Secondly, I know you love the school and so do I. There are many people out there who have contributed to this article and that is why the project was begun so we can discuss changes. I don't want to be critical, but you keep making major changes without getting a consensus. The recent removal of the "BCC07.jpg" from the info box is an example. I would rather see the school itself when you open this page rather than (with all due respect) Golem88991's ring. The "Cityring.jpg" is already being used in the project template, a clean image of the school is more appropriate for the info box. I don't unnderstand why you would want the ring instead of the great picture of the school (that you created) to be the first thing that the reader sees when looking up City?67knight·talk·19:03, 9 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Baltimore City College

I would like to nominate this article for Good Article status in the near future. However, before that can happen a couple of key things need to be done to the article.

  • The academic section needs to be expanded.
  • Information about all sports at city college needs to be added.
  • Gaps in the history of city college need to be filled in.
  • Any major extracurricular activities not included need to be added.
  • Any major topics not discussed need to be added
  • Citations need to conform to Wikipedia citation templates.
  • More and varying sources need to be added to the article.

If you could assist with any of these tasks it would be greatly appreciated. Golem88991 03:36, 13 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] DYK:History of Baltimore City College

Wanted to let you know that the history of Baltimore City College was in the did you know section of the main page on 22 July 2007. Congratulations Baltimore City College WikiProject! I also wanted to thank you for uploading the image of the ring. I did not use it in the template mainly because I did not want to orphan the old image. However, I was considering starting a section about the ring on the City page and think your image should be used there. Golem88991 02:03, 23 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] New and improved alumni page

[edit] Possible improvements to Alumni page

Shading appears where relevant

I am working on creating a table-type-list for the alumni page(List of Baltimore City College people). The advantage is that it would be sortable. A researcher could take a look with all entries sort it alphabetically, or by Category or by year of graduation. I have done about a fifth of the names, but before I continued i wanted to get your input on whether you like it, what headings you might change etc. anyway here it is:

Category Class Alumni Reasoning for notability
United States SenateUnited States Senate 1960 Cardin, Ben Benjamin L. Cardin (D), U.S. Senator (2007-Present), Maryland, U.S. Congressman for Maryland's 3rd District, (1988-2007)
United States SenateUnited States Senate SymingtonWilliam Stuart Symington, III (D), U.S. Senator, Missouri (1953-1976), 1st Secretary of the U.S. Air Force[1]

GovGovernors of Maryland 1918 MckeldinTheodore R. McKeldin 53rd Governor, Maryland
GovGovernors of Maryland NiceHarry Nice 50th Governor, Maryland

I like the idea of moving to a table as opposed to a traditionally listing. It does seem to be easier to locate specific individuals and is also a better presentation of the info. Thanks for your work on this. Golem88991 13:17, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

It looks great!Marylandstater 16:44, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

Finished product looks excellent, with a little work on the citations (wikify), a few more images and completed dates of graduation, it could be nominated for a featured list! Marylandstater 23:20, 1 August 2007 (UTC)

Great work on the list!!! I think this is a huge improvement over the way it use to be. My only comment is that I think we may want to remove the shading for political affiliation. My three reasons for this are as follows:

  1. The list is not inherently political, though there are politicians on the list that is not its primary function.
  2. The information is in many cases redundant, as there is also an indication in the individuals description of their political affiliation.
  3. This is a personal feeling, but aesthetically it is bizarre that some rows are shaded and some are not.

I do not want you to think that these comments are in anyway intended to suggest that I do not like the new format. To the contrary I think that this is an extreme improvement over what was there. I just think that this suggestion could further refine the list. Thank you for all your work on this. Golem88991 15:11, 2 August 2007 (UTC)

It does not need to be removed, I was just saying that it looks a little strange for the list to have the shading in some parts and then there is a break until the next shading. I simply wanted to discuss it as a possible improvement; I do not want to suggest that it needs to be changed. However, you have lead this effort so I will defer to your decision on the matter. And I do agree with you our primary concern should be sources and completing the table not aesthetics.
With respect to adding more info, I do not really think it is necessary. Our primary concern with the list is how they were associated with City and what they did that is notable. The only other column I can think of adding would be one for pictures of the individuals, but that would make the effort nearly impossible, as it would be hard to find public domain photos of all these guys. Thanks again for your leadership on this. To think that we could have a featured list!!! That I never imagined, though we still have a lot of work ahead of us. Thanks, Golem88991 23:16, 2 August 2007 (UTC)

The names should be in alphabetical order; and should be the first item/category on the list. I have no problem doing it just want to know what you folks think. The current order is a bit confusing especially to those with no connection to school, and therefore no idea what catagory the notables are in b/c they have no idea who graduated from the school. Furthermore it suggests some roles are more important than others (i.e. US Senator over nobel prize winner, or US Congressman or state delegate) while the latter is commonly accepted I think alphabetical order ensures more fair exposure for all. So my suggestion is:

Alumnae(us)[in alphabetical order], Category, Notability, Year of Graduation.

Also I think the color scheme is a bit confusing, as it is designated for republicans and democrats to rehash Golem88991's point the page is by nature "not political". Perhaps we could designate colors for the categories (i.e. red for the arts, blue for politics and so on.) Or we could go with no colors at all but the fact that some are with and others without colors makes it confusing. But overall I am impressed with the efforts to improve this page we should be a featured list in no time. Please let me know what you think and whether you approve the suggestions--Bcc07 19:08, 3 August 2007 (UTC)

Thanks I have a better understanding of how the list works now...I think we may want to consider using the same style but dividing the lists into the subgroups (arts politics etc) much like this example List of Michigan State University people--Bcc07 00:09, 7 August 2007 (UTC)

I agree with Bcc07, on this. I have been looking at the Michigan list and I think it is a good model to go by. I have read your response to Bcc07 about how with the full list it is easier to find people by name or by graduation year. I understand the argument, but I think the reality is that most people will go to list from the main article and be unfamiliar with the graduates of city college. It will be much easier for those individuals to have a page that is divided by category, so that they can see the different accomplishments in the different fields. Though, I know that the single list is divided by category it is much harder to see the divisions between the categories at first glance. If the tables are divided visually it is much easier to see the different categories. I also think that by dividing it into multiple tables there would be a reason to have the political shading because those sections that deal with politics would be separate from apolitical categories. Thanks, Golem88991 17:36, 9 August 2007 (UTC)
An addendum to my previous comment. I agree with you, I think the sortable feature is neat and I think even if we do divide the table into smaller tables we should still incorporate that feature. Golem88991 17:41, 9 August 2007 (UTC)

Considering you did the bulk of the work, I consider your request to wait until the table is done more than fair. I will try to help with the completion of the least and I guess we will reassess the situation at that point. Either way the table ends up though, I think there is one thing we can borrow from the Michigan list and that is the separate column for references. What are your feelings on that? [edit] BCC Football

This page is not necessary I think it should be deleted or changed to a City-Poly Footabll Game page. I have a couple concerns the first is that the BCC Football program is certainly not notable, and the info presented is not very extensive this is certainly not worthy of its own page. We could create a page for every single activity at City College at this rate, I think we both know that is unneccessary and certainly not the best use of wikipedia. My second and main concern is that this page was done unilaterally and without the consent of the wikiproject. You have bashed a few of my submissions for them being without your known consent, I would very much appreciate it if these "rules or courtesies" which u made me aware of were practiced by you. To Quote you:

Thanks. My feeling on the list is that as long as they attended they should be on there. If there is not indication that an individual attended city, then I agree with you he should be removed, as seems to be the case with Medairy and Goad. Golem88991 19:52, 17 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Your recent vandalism

Are you kidding me? First off neither of those two people are rather notable. Secondly you act as if I have to notify you about any action I take on wikipedia point me to the rule that indicates that all action on this so called project goes through you. You act as if this project is about you, and like your editing your own page(which is illegitimate you know). This is not 67knight project so please stop attempting to lead where you are doing the least and being the most uncooperative. I would like to remind that the project was neither your idea nor work at putting together and keeping together. Moreover, when did you notify people about the addition of the BCC football page the idea was never bounced around. No consent was given by single member of the project. You have split this project apart congrats on your work. I especially like the addition of the confusing alumni page.--Bcc07 07:37, 20 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] City Knights nationally ranked?

67knight, would you happen to know when the Knights have been nationally ranked, either by USA Today or some other reputable publication?

Also, can you check my user page out for a copy edit of the main extracurriculars section of the BCC main page? I'm just looking for some feedback and more specific info. Thanks. --WriterThesp77 20:38, 24 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] A History of Baltimore City College Football

City v Poly (November, 2006) M&T Bank Stadium
City v Poly (November, 2006) M&T Bank Stadium

Rivalires between schools on the football gridiron began in 1869 when Rutgers beat Princeton; the Harvard-Yale rivalry started soon after as did the City-Poly rivalry. In 1889, the first game was played between Baltimore City College and the Baltimore Manual Training School, which was later renamed the Baltimore Polytechnic Institute (Poly). [2] Since that first game, City's football Knights have competed in more than 1000 contests, won more than 20 Maryland Scholastic Association(MSA) and Baltimore City championships, while emphasizing academics and fair play.[3] Five City College football players have gone on to play in the National Football League: Bob Baldwin '62 (Baltimore Colts)[4] , Ara Person '66 (St. Louis Cardinals)[5] , John Sykes '67 (San Diego Chargers)[6], Tom Gatewood '68 (New York Giants)[7] , Bryant Johnson (Arizona Cardinals). City College varsity head coach George Young also served in the NFL as the general manager of the New York Giants from 1979 to 1997 and as an assistant coach with the Baltimore Colts and the Miami Dolphins.

[edit] History

In the late 1880's, the popularity of football had grown to the point where even high schools started to form organized teams. It was in this era that the City College football team was born, with one problem: there were no other area high schools with organized teams. In 1895, therefore, City had to schedule games against college teams like the University of Maryland, the Naval Academy, Mt. St. Mary's College, Western Maryland College and even the Fort Monroe soldiers. The record in 1895: 3 wins 13 losses, including a 42-0 drubbing at the hands of Navy.[8] In its first game of the 1896 season, Gettysburg college trounced City 50-0, but enthusiasm for the team continued to grow as evidence by the send off given them before they sailed to Hampton, Virginia to play Hampton high school.[9] By the early 1900's, area high schools had developed football teams and City was able to compete on a more level playing field, beating, for instance, the newly formed Polytechnic team 13-0 in 1903. Little is known about the first time City played Poly, except that the game was played at northeast Baltimore's Clifton Park in 1889 between the City "reserves" team and Poly with City emerging as the victor.[10] City won all 12 games from 1889 to 1900 when the annual clash was considered a scrub engagement. .[11] The annual meeting of the two teams has led to one of the longest continuous public high school football rivalries in the nation.[10] By 1918, Poly and other area schools had surpassed City in their preparation for the games. According to William Tippett, Jr, class of 1919, City's team did not even have a practice field because of its location in down town Baltimore.[3]

[edit] The Harry Lawrence era

By 1929 the Knights had a new $3 million, 40 acre home in northeast Baltimore. The "Castle on the Hill" had spacious practice fields with a separate "game day field". Under legendary coach Harry Lawrence, the Knights dominated local teams, including Poly whom they beat consecutively from 1934 to 1942; and started playing schools out of state, beating Petersberg high in 1936.[12] The 1936 team won all nine of its games but was stripped of its MSA title when one of City's running backs, Arthur Deckleman, was ruled to be ineligible. The investigating committee gave the title to the Mcdonough school, a team City had beaten 12-0 during the regular season. [13] By 1940, Lawrence's teams were undefeated in 38 consecutive games, won 3 consecutive state titles and retired the trophy presented by the Evening Sun for the winner of the City-Poly game.[14] In 1941, an undefeated City College went to Florida, to play Miami High in the Orange Bowl. The Knights, used to playing in cool autumnal or cold winter weather, succumbed to Miami High on a day where the temperature topped 90 degrees.[15] After the season was over, Lawrence and and his long-time assistant, Otts Helms joined the war effort. Helms was a captain in the Army and Lawrence served as a Lieutenant in the Navy for the remainder of World War II. Poly, under its legendary coach Bob Lumsden, dominated City and Maryland football during the 1950's with City unable to win any of the rivalry games during that decade.

[edit] The George Young era

The trend would reverse again as George Young took over the coaching duties in 1959. Young had actually been a history teacher at City, but an assistant coach at rival Calvert Hall College. Young brought discipline back to the practice field and an emphasis on grades. He also brought in young aggressive special teams coaches Joe Brune, Bob Patzwall, Mel Filler, and Ed Novak; all of whom would become head coaches later in their careers with Brune coaching the Loyola Dons for more than 25 years. Young's summer camps were brutal with an emphasis on running and conditioning as opposed to tackling and kicking. Young's teams won 6 of the 8 games he coached against Poly during the 1960's and six MSA championships.[3] One of the most memorable City–Poly games occurred on Thanksgiving Day 1965, at Baltimore's Memorial Stadium, with some 25,000 fans and alumni in attendance. City beat Poly 52–6, and completed a 10–0 season with the team being ranked eighth in the nation by a national sports poll. [16] The 52 points scored by City are the most points scored by either team during the rivalry.[17] Two Knights from that game, Sykes and Person went on to the National Football League; former Baltimore Mayor Kurt Schmoke was the quarterback and Maryland Delegate Curt Anderson was the captain of that team. The game is no longer played on Thanksgiving or at Memorial Stadium, but is now located at the home of the Baltimore Ravens, M&T Bank Stadium, in downtown Baltimore.

[edit] The George Petrides era

Knights on Defense vs. Poly, 1994
Knights on Defense vs. Poly, 1994

Coach George Petrides, City College class of '67, has been the head football coach at City since 1975;[18] a tenure longer than the previous 10 coaches combined. During the 1960's, Petrides played on City College teams that never lost a game, but at the beginning of his coaching career, he was faced with almost impossible circumstances. The City College building was being renovated forcing enrollment to plummet and the student body to take courses at the old Poly buidling on North Avenue in midtown Baltimore. The athletic practice field was two miles away and in 1979 Petrides was forced to use his junior varsity team to play Poly's varsity because of the dwindling enrollment. [19] The Castle on the Hill reopened in 1978 but the Knights did not manage a win against Poly again until 1987. With the coming of the 1990's came a rebirth of City College football dominance. During that time, Petrides and his chief assistant coach Angelo Geppi led the team through a 29 game winning streak—the longest consecutive winning streak in the history of Maryland football. [20] Petrides and Geppi also led the team to two consecutive MSA - A Conference championships in 1991 and 1992. [20] In 1993, Baltimore City Schools withdrew from the MSA in order to join the other public schools in the state which are under the umbrella of the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association (MPSSAA). [21] The move meant that City College could compete in a state-wide play-off system and perhaps earn a state championship; but because of when the state play-offs were scheduled, it also meant that City would have to hold its traditional game against Poly three weeks before Thanksgiving. Since then, City has won numerous Baltimore City championships, but never a state championship. On September 11, 2006, Petrides was honored as the Baltimore Ravens High School Coach of the Week for the third time.[18] Less than a month later, City and Poly clashed in the 118th City–Poly football game.[17] Petrides' Black Knights beat Poly 44-8, won the Baltimore City championship, finished the 2006 season 11-1, but lost the Maryland state class 3A North championship game, 7-6.[22]

I am working to reinvigorate the project. Any suggestions you may have would be helpful. Let's get some momentum going again. Golem88991 05:50, 10 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] October 2007

You currently appear to be engaged in an edit war according to the reverts you have made on Miami Northwestern High School. Note that the three-revert rule prohibits making more than three reversions in a content dispute within a 24 hour period. Additionally, users who perform a large number of reversions in content disputes may be blocked for edit warring, even if they do not technically violate the three-revert rule. If you continue, you may be blocked from editing. Please do not repeatedly revert edits, but use the talk page to work towards wording and content that gains a consensus among editors. [edit] Duplicate images uploaded

Thanks for uploading Image:Edmondson.jpg. A machine-controlled robot account noticed that you also uploaded the same image under the name Image:Eastern shore 023 edited.jpg. The copy called Image:Eastern shore 023 edited.jpg has been marked for speedy deletion since it is redundant. If this sounds okay to you, there is no need for you to take any action.

This is an automated message- you have not upset or annoyed anyone, and you do not need to respond. In the future, you may save yourself some confusion if you supply a meaningful file name and refer to 'my contributions' to remind yourself exactly which name you chose (file names are case sensitive, including the extension) so that you won't lose track of your uploads. For tips on good file naming, see Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions about this notice, or feel that the deletion is inappropriate, please contact User:Staecker, who operates the robot account. Staeckerbot 23:14, 22 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Hall of Fame

Should we create a Hall of fame section either on the main page or the alumni page? If you agree that one is necessary might you be able to lead in its creation.Bcc07 21:37, 27 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] BCC Seal

Do you have a BCC seal or know how to get one that we could use on the main page? I think it would be more appropriate.Bcc07 21:37, 27 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] License tagging for Image:1westside07.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:1westside07.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 15:05, 28 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Alumni

I made a list of the deleted alumni from the category (now restored). It's at User:Roundhouse0/test13; you might like to see if there is anyone there who is not on your admirable list. -- roundhouse0 (talk) 10:11, 29 April 2008 (UTC)
