4-4-2+2-4-4

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A 4-4-2+2-4-4, in the Whyte notation for the classification of steam locomotives by wheel arrangement, is a Garratt articulated locomotive. The wheel arrangement is effectively two 4-4-2 "Atlantic" locomotives operating back to back. The type is thus sometimes called a Double Atlantic.

Other equivalent classifications are:
UIC classification: 2B1+1B2 (also known as German classification and Italian classification)
French classification: 221+122
Turkish classification: 25+25
Swiss classification: 2/5+2/5

This was not a common Garratt arrangement; ten were built by Beyer, Peacock, owner of the Garratt patent, and none by any other builder. The first were a pair for the Tasmanian Government Railways in Australia; these were to 3 ft 6 in (1,067 mm) narrow gauge. All the others were built for Argentina, to standard gauge; five in 1927 for the Entre Rios Railway (Ferrocarril Entre Rios, FCER), and three in 1930 for the Argentine North Eastern Railway (Ferrocarril Nordeste Argentino, FCNAR). All ended up on the Ferrocarril General Urquiza after nationalization in 1948.[1]
