.rs is the Internet country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Serbia. Following the decision on 26 September 2006 by the ISO 3166 Maintenance Agency to allocate RS as the ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 code for Serbia IANA assigned .rs as ccTLD for this country. This decision followed the June 2006 split of Serbia and Montenegro into two separate countries. Along with the Montenegrin ME, RS replaces the code YU which was assigned to the former Serbia and Montenegro.
On July 8, 2006, the Registry for National Internet Domain of Serbia - RNIDS was founded by the Ministry of Science and a group of 34 organizations interested in the domain.
ICANN has resolved[1] that the former .yu domain to be operated temporarily by the Serbian National Register of Internet Domain Names, the operators of the new .rs domain registry, until its eventual abolition on or before 30 September 2009.
This allows a two-year transition period for existing .yu names to be transferred either to .me (which is to be delegated to the Government of Montenegro) or to .rs (for Serbian domains).
The delegation of name servers by IANA is in process of population, as of September 26th, 2007.[2]
The letters of .rs stand for Republika Srbija (The Republic of Serbia).
Registration of the domain names with .rs extension commenced on Monday, March 10, 2008 at 12h noon.

The top level domain is intended for all interested users. All sub-domains except in.rs are reserved for legal entities only.
Regular .rs registrations will be made under the following second-level domains:[3]
- .co.rs – Corporations
- .org.rs – Civil organizations and associations
- .edu.rs – Educational institutions and organizations (outside of ac.rs sub-domain)
- .ac.rs (delegated) – Academic and research network of Serbia
- .gov.rs (delegated) – State and Government authorities
- .in.rs – Personal use
