.md is the Internet country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Moldova.
.md has been marketed as an Internet domain dedicated to the medical community, and its marketers proclaim it to be the only such domain. Many independent physicians and group medical practices, medical associations, patient groups, healthcare corporations and medical institutions use the .md domain name for their Web addresses.
MoldData is the official provider of .md domain names. MoldData is a state owned company. MoldData gave for a short time exclusively rights on .md domains to MaxMD for a big sum of money. So far, all registrations was done by MaxMD exclusively. If a client wanted to register a domain on nic.md, he got redirected to max.md. After some weeks, MoldData took back the control ofter their .md tld.
Around 1999, the .md domain name was leased out by the country for the use of Maryland residents.
