[edit] "clarification of the "monopole problem"
Technically, the "monopole problem" is not that we haven't discovered monopoles yet. The "monopole problem" instead refers to the cosmological implications of grand unification (GUTS). Since monopoles are generically on the menu in GUTS and since they are expected to be quite massive, their existence in the early universe threatens to overclose it. This was considered a "problem" with the standard big bang theory. Cosmic inflation remedies the situation by diluting any primordial abundance of magnetic monopoles (see the wikipedia "cosmic inflation" page, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cosmic_inflation#Magnetic_monopole_problem", for a discussion of this).- bapowellphysics 18:06, 10 June 2007 (UTC)
