  • July 6, 1996: Zane Smith was released by the Pittsburgh Pirates. [4]
  • July 23, 1996: Danny Darwin was traded by the Pittsburgh Pirates to the Houston Astros for Rich Loiselle. [5]
  • August 30, 1996: Charlie Hayes was traded by the Pittsburgh Pirates to the New York Yankees for a player to be named later. The New York Yankees sent Chris Corn (minors) (August 31, 1996) to the Pittsburgh Pirates to complete the trade. [6]
