Pete Sampras dominates the year on the men's side, winning the Australian Open and Wimbledon as well as three "Super 9" events (now known as the ATP Masters Series) - Indian Wells, Miami and Rome. That Rome title would become the biggest clay-court title of Sampras' career, given his struggles at the French Open.

Andre Agassi wins the U.S. Open and Sergi Bruguera stuns the world to win the French Open. Andrei Medvedev wins both Hamburg and Monte Carlo, while Agassi wins Canada and Paris. Michael Chang wins Cincinnati and Boris Becker wins Madrid.
