The 1992 African Cup of Nations was the 18th edition of the African Cup of Nations, the soccer championship of Africa (CAF). It was hosted by Senegal. The field expanded to twelve teams, split into four groups of three; the top two teams in each group advanced to the quarterfinals. Côte d'Ivoire won its first championship, beating Ghana on penalty kicks 11-10 after a goaless draw.

In the Quarter Finals,Cameroon beat Senegal 1:0 (Goal: Ebongue), Nigeria beat Zaire 2:0, Ivory Coast beat Zambia 1:0 and Ghana beat Congo Brazzaville 2:1 (Goals; Ghana: Tony Yeboah, Abedi Pele; Congo: Nzou).
Abedi Pele's winning goal against Congo Brazzaville was adjudged to be the goal of the tournament.
[edit] Semi-finals
In the Semi Finals, Cameroon lost to Côte d'Ivoire 3:1 on penalties after a 0:0 tie. Ghana came from a goal behind to beat Nigeria 2:1. (Goals; Ghana: Abedi pele '41, Prince Polley '57; Nigeria: Adepoju '11)
Abedi Pele took a yellow card after showing dissent to a Tunisian referee amidst his frustration when the referee whistled a team mate's tackle on Nigerian defender Ajibade Babalade. This made the Ghanaian captain and livewire ineligible for the final, since he had already taken a yellow in the match against Egypt in the group stages. The suspension was particularly hurtful to Ghana as Abedi Pele had been the tournament's outstanding performer, scoring 3 goals in 4 matches - including the equalizer in the semi final match in question. Abedi was the defending African footballer of the year, as well as a top player in Olympique Marseille of France - considered the best European club side at the time. Abedi's performance in the tournament is to this day considered one of the most outstanding displays by a footballer at any level in an international tournament, and earned him the nick name "The African Maradona".

Côte d'Ivoire were powered by Sergi Maggi, Guel, Tiehi, Otokori, Abdoulaye Traore, Moussa Traore, and inspirational keeper Alain Gouamene who didn't concede a goal in the entire tournament. With Abedi Pele watching from the sidelines, Ghana featured Tony Yeboah, Prince Polley, Nii Lamptey and Tony Baffoe. At the time, this was an unprecedented number of foreign based players participating in an African cup final. Because of their wins over highly fancied Zambia, Egypt and Nigeria - Ghana were considered favorites. But with the absence of Abedi Pele - then adjudged by FIFA to be amongst the 10 best players in the world, as well as Gouamene's clean sheet in the tournament - this match was rightly expected to be Ghana's most difficult.
In a scintillating shootout, Tiehi Joel miseed for Côte d'Ivoire while Isaac Asare missed for Ghana. After every player in each team had participated in the shootout, Tony Baffoe missed his second penalty kick for Ghana to make the score 10:11 for Côte d'Ivoire. The Cup was presented to them by the Senegalese president, Abdou Diouf.
Abedi Pele was adjudged player of the tournament, Yekini Rashidi was the biggest goal scorer and Nigeria beat Cameroon to win third place. The tournament was considered a landmark cup in African soccer history, because of the tournament's expanded size as well as the dominance of west African teams. The cup also attracted a then unprecedented amount of international attention because of the number of European based players on display for virtually each team in the competition. This was Ivory Coast's first and only African cup trophy to date, and marked Ghana's 7th appearance in a final match (a record at the time). Nigeria featured many of its would-be key players in their historic 1994 world cup campaign, whilst Cameroon featured most of their 1990 World Cup team which had reach the quarter finals (An African record).
