The 1987 Shell Ultra Australian Touring Car Championship was the 28th running of the Australian Touring Car Championship. It began on March 1, 1987 at Calder Park Raceway and ended on July 5 at Oran Park Raceway after 9 rounds.

Points were awarded 20-15-12-10-8-6-4-3-2-1 based on the top ten outright race positions, and 9-6-4-3-2-1 based on top six positions in two engine capacity based classes, with the divide between the two classes set at 3000cc. Class A consisted of Ford Mustang, Ford Sierra, Holden Commodore, Nissan Skyline and Toyota Supra. Class B consisted of Alfa Romeo 75, BMW 323i, BMW M3, Holden Gemini, Nissan Gazelle, Toyota Celica and Toyota Corolla. Best eight round results counted towards final point score.
