[edit] Main Event
There were 8 entrants to the main event. Each paid $5,000 to enter the tournament, Benny Binion added $5,000 into the prize pool for every player who entered, to gain more publicity from the event and draw bigger crowds into Binion's Horseshoe.
Doyle Brunson actually cashed out his chips for $20,000 when the tournament was down to 3-handed because he felt too ill to play. Amarillo Slim went on to win the 1972 main event overcoming Puggy Pearson's 2-1 chip lead. Barry Greenstein stated on card player's "The Circuit" that Brunson and Puggy actually threw the match so Slim could win and pay the taxes and Puggy and Doyle could split the winnings. This would allow Slim to have the glory and Puggy and Doyle could have the money.
