- 24 June - Last person put on pillory in England, Peter Bosse, in addition to six months in prison and seven years of penal transportation to Australia.
- 26 June - William IV succeeds George IV as King.[1]
- August - General election results in a Tory victory, but with a reduced majority.[2]
- 28 August - Machine-breaking Swing Riots break out in Kent and spread across southern and eastern England.
- 31 August - Edwin Beard Budding is granted a patent for the invention of lawnmower.
- 15 September - Liverpool and Manchester Railway opened (world's first intercity passenger railway operated solely by steam locomotives). At the opening, Liverpool MP William Huskisson is accidentally killed by Stephenson's Rocket, thereby becoming the first railway casualty.[3]
- 11 November - The Liverpool and Manchester Railway begins carrying mail.[3]
- 22 November - The Whig Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey succeeds Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom (see also Grey Ministry.)
