Hi! I'd be happy to help you in any ways I can - I'm a reasonably experienced Wikipedian - about 6,000 edits and a couple of featured articles under by belt. If you have any burning questions or need for advice, you can leave messages for me on my talk page or you can email me at <sjbaker1@airmail.net>. I visit Wikipedia most days - although I'm going to be out of town much of next week - so there may be a day or two when I won't be around. I'll take a look through your recent contributions and see whether there is any instant advice I can come up with.

I see a lot of messy confusion over your username change. We need to get that straightened out, pronto, because Wikipedians generally don't like people to have more than one username - it's called "sock puppetry" and it makes people suspicious of your intentions. So pick a name - stick with it - don't ever use the other name again and don't ever change it again!

What are your main areas of interest? I see you've contributed some stuff related to Dublin and started an article about Cúram Software, and as User:Blckdmnd99, you edited quite a few different articles - I don't see any obviously common theme to your interests!

Hi Steve! Awesome and thanks first of all! You're right about my name change having been a bit messy, but it seems to be about completed now. For some reason I thought it'd be as simple as 'moving' my userpage to the new name but that proved to be wishful thinking! Nick's steered me in the right direction though. The articles on the DjD acct weren't me. I've been blckdmnd99 for years, but mostly just started editing recently. When I just moved my user page to User:DjD, it let me do it since that person had never actually created the page. All my edits have been under user:blckdmnd99 and now user:-DjD-.
Anywho! As for interests I've been tempted to get involved w/ either Wikipedia:WikiProject_New_York_City or Wikipedia:WikiProject_Chemistry but have mostly been making contributions when I happen on an article that could use some tidying up (eg, Borgata). -DjD- 13:17, 7 April 2007 (UTC)

I suppose nothing in particular at the moment, just nice to have a place to go to when questions come up. The biggest thing I'm trying to learn is the wiki-etiquete. What changes you can just make and which ones you should discuss first. When to just revert and when to get consensus first... things like that. If a particular example comes up I'll be sure to ask. OK! I'm here for you! About consensus:
  • Short answer: Wikipedia:Be bold in updating pages.
  • Longer answer: In general, the Wikipedia directive to "be bold" suggests that you should just go ahead and make your change - no need to discuss. The problem with that is that your edit might get reverted by someone else who disagrees with it (and who is also being bold)! OK - so how just how serious is that? If you spent an awful lot of effort on the change and the consensus is that you shouldn't have done it then you just wasted an enormous amount of work for no benefit. So it would perhaps have been better to discuss it first...not so much for the benefit of the community - but purely for your own benefit. The other time to get consensus is needed is when adding something is going to cause an enormous series of revert wars and general upset. It's worth discussing it first so that the series of to-and-fro debates happen in the talk page - and not in the face of our readership.
When it comes to reverts - always, always revert vandalism and obvious misinformation and terrible grammar - revert those without discussion just as soon as you see them - say why in the edit summary. For other stuff, I'll generally be bold and just revert stuff I don't like - I'm always careful to put at least a full sentence of explanation in the Edit Summary field - and if the person who put the change in is an established editor of this article then I'll probably put an explanation in the talk page and add "See Talk!" into the Edit summary...I might even leave them a note on their talk page. Now, it's important to say that all of that advice is for a 'first reversion'. If the person puts the edit back in again, then unless it's blatent vandalism, I'll ALWAYS take it to a discussion on the talk page...whether I'll re-revert depends on how passionately I believe they are wrong! If I know they are wrong - and can prove it - then I'll revert and explain at length in talk - if I'm unsure of my ground then I won't revert and I'll ask to discuss it on talk so I can find out why the other guy thinks I'm wrong. Beware always of the Three Revert Rule...violation of that can get you a ban from Wikipedia for 24 hours or more...don't do that!!
When people revert my stuff...tricky...it doesn't happen often - but it happens. You've gotta take that on a case-by-case basis. If this is a common problem for you, let's discuss it again the next time it happens so we can talk specifics.
I hope all of this rambling helps - and remember, it's just my advice - I'm not quoting a Wikipedia rule or anything.

There is something odd going on with your signature by the way. It's coming up as a red link because your signature says you are 'User:-DJD-'...not 'User:DJD' - you might want to read Wikipedia:Signatures - especially the section on customising your signature. I think you have a 'gone wrong' customised sig with '-' signes where they shouldn't be. I'm not an expert on this (I have a very naive attitude to sigs! I use my real name and no customisation...no imagination at all!). I can research the problem further if you can't figure it out yourself. SteveBaker 17:27, 7 April 2007 (UTC)
Good eye Steve. I just had to move my userpage from User:DjD to the new name. Note that I never was officially DjD... I had just moved my User:Blckdmnd99 -> User:DjD without understanding WP:CHU. I think we're straight now though! My username has officially been changed from Blckdmnd99 -> -DjD- and my userpages are now in the right spot (Blckdmnd99 -> DjD -> -DjD-). Awesome. I love the user-boxes - lots of interesting stuff there. I'm also a fan of the Wii - it's a fun toy. The RayMan game was a lot of fun - my son and I finished it in two evenings (two very L-O-N-G evenings!). I'm an amateur games writer (hopefully going pro very soon now) - I'm currently writing for the Nintendo DS...I hope to be moving to the Wii later when others have figured out how to get amateur games software onto the thing. Cool Steve. I'll have to check out RayMan. I've heard good things about it but have never played the series before. Haven't had a console since N64 but the Wii was compelling. :) A good buddy of mine loves his DS and is looking forward to some Wii / DS compatibility. Hi! I hadn't heard from you for a while - so I thought I'd check in and see how things are going. Looks like you are doing great stuff to Periodic table articles - good work! I noticed you reverted a vandalism of Borgata by some anonymous editor. When you do that, you should probably go to their talk page and add a {{subst:test1|Borgota}} so that they are warned not to do this again. If they do, escalate to test2, test3 then test4 and at test4, report them to the admins. It doesn't always do much good - but once in a while, a sharp rebuke scares them off. In the afternoon, we will hold a session dedicated to meta:Wikimedia New York City activities, elect a board of directors, and hold salon-style group discussions on Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects (see the last meeting's minutes).

We'll also review our recent Wikipedia Takes Manhattan event, and make preparations for our exciting successor Wiki Week bonanza, being planned with Columbia University students for September or October.

In the evening, we'll share dinner and chat at a local restaurant, and (weather permitting) hold a late-night astronomy event at Columbia's telescopes.
