Talk:Édouard Lalo
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
What can I tell my 8 yr old daughter about this composer, Lalo, and his work to make him compelling and engaging for her? She plays violin and each week we pick a composer to consider and listen to. This week she picked Lalo. Thoughts?
- He wrote one work (Symphonie Espagnole, composed for Pablo de Sarasate) that has become a minor classic of the repertory for violin with orchestra; his cello concerto has been taken up by fewer but a large number of performers; his other works - there were published at least forty-five - are in a number of different genres (a violinist might also want to try performing his violin sonata, his F major violin concerto, or his Concerto Russe. The violin concerto is almost exactly contemporary with the famous Symphonie). There is an opera (Roi d'Ys, about 1888), a ballet (Namouna), a Rapsodie Norvegienne, but otherwise much of his output is "absolute music" - however (opinion, this) the quality is high and the emotion rarely neutral. (I remember the string quartet he wrote late in his life, a work I've only heard a few times, as being fairly restrained- still good, just restrained- however. Now the first of his piano trios, a very early work, I'd describe as both good, tuneful and not so restrained!) Not sure if this answers your question though? There is a short story "Russisch Concert" of dutch novellist Maarten t Hart [[1]] who describes how he encounters a work from Lalo and his quest to find out what he heard actually. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.111.36.217 (talk) 21:05, 11 January 2008 (UTC)
