"Your Woman" is a 1997 music single released by British one-man band White Town, also known as Jyoti Mishra.[1] It features a trumpet line (although here the line is played by an oboe) taken from "My Woman" by Al Bowlly (which sounds like a slightly altered version of the first phrase of "The Imperial March" from Star Wars) and it reached number one in the British charts in 1997. It also hit number 23 on the Billboard Hot 100.
The song is often known by the title of the EP on which it originally appeared — "Abort, Retry, Fail?". The song later also appeared as the centerpiece of White Town's full-length album Women in Technology.
The lyrics are directed towards a straight man, but it is unclear whether the narrator is supposed to be a straight woman or a gay man (despite the fact that the singer is male). The most common interpretation seems to be that the narrator has already slept with his (presumably bisexual) subject at one point, but was then rejected and laments that he will never be the man's "woman." Moreover, he now sees that such a hope is misplaced and considers himself better off without. However, the artist himself has reported that the lyrics could stem from or be relatable to multiple situations. [ http://www.whitetown.co.uk/faq/ ]
The music video was produced in black-and-white silent film style. Nearly all of the outdoor scenes were filmed in Derby City Centre (UK). There is one scene in the videoclip where the female actor closes the door on the male actor's arm, as she tries to escape from his advances. This is a direct reference to a very similar scene from Salvador Dalí and Luis Buñuel's 1928 surrealist film Un chien andalou.
The song was covered by Tyler James in July 2005.
