Your Horoscope for Today (also known as "YHFT" and "That's Your Horoscope For Today") is a song by "Weird Al" Yankovic, originally featuring on the album Running With Scissors (1999). It is not a direct parody, it is however a style parody of the Third Wave Ska movement, more specifically the bands Reel Big Fish, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, and The Toasters. The song features Tavis Werts on trumpet, and Dan Regan on trombone (Both were members of the third-wave ska band Reel Big Fish). Considered by many to be one of Weird Al's more original songs, the song is an elaborate parody of horoscope pages, using the twelve astrological symbols.
[edit] Lyrics
The lyrics are written in the style of a horoscope, talking about future events. However the humorous effect is caused by the specific events. The other category of the lyrics, as well as the absurd, is in contrast to the upbeat tone of horoscopes, say depressing things such as, "fill that void in your pathetic life," and, "you'll never find true happiness." This song also parodies the tendency of horoscopes to say you are intelligent and give each star sign a personality: "All Virgos are extremely friendly and intelligent, except for you". Examples of absurd events mixed in with the usual horoscopes include, "Your love life will run into trouble [normal for a horoscope] when your fiance hurls a javelin through your chest [an example of the absurd]." The other aspect of horoscopes it satirizes is the giving of advice. "All your friends are laughing behind your back... KILL THEM." In addition, it also parodies the fact that horoscopes have no scientific backing: "(Now you may find it inconceivable or at the very least a bit unlikely that the relative position of the planets and the stars could have a special deep significance or meaning that exclusively applies to only you, but let me give you my assurance that these forecasts and predictions are all based on solid, scientific, documented evidence, so you would have to be some kind of moron not to realize that every single one of them is absolutely true.)"
[edit] Parodies
Though the song itself is a style parody, Ian Beckman wrote new lyrics to the song's tune about World of Warcraft character classes called That's the World of Warcraft that you play. Instead of each star sign, Beckman sings about each class in turn and usually makes ironic statements about them. The song and its accompanying video[1] was entered into the Xfire Summer Movie Contest in 2006 and came third in the Dance/Music Category.
