Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Intersection logo white.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to [[:Image:|the image description page]] and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Image:Bloodinthebrain.jpg, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. [edit] Image policies explained

Hi Youngben. I'm an administrator, in the middle of my regular task of deleting images that have been added to a special category for deletion; and, having seen how, for at least two images, you've mentioned that permission had been given for use in a Wikipedia article, I'd like to explain a little bit about our image policies.

Wikipedia recognises two kinds of images: free and non-free. A free image, according to our policy, is one which allows others to use it, modify it, redistribute it, made derivative works, etc., and even to use it (or their own modifications of it) for commercial gain. Such images could be in the public domain, or they could be licensed under a special free licence, such as GFDL, which allows others to use it for any purpose, but requires that your work still be attributed to you. Anything that doesn't have a free licence is considered to be copyrighted, and we only use such images when there's no freely-licensed image available, no reasonable prospect of a Wikipedian being able to obtain a freely-licensed image (many Wikipedians have been inspired, by our strict policy, to take the trouble to go along to some function where someone famous was speaking, and take a photo) and when we can show that the image is not being used just to decorate or enhance an article, but where it contributes significantly to our understanding of the subject being discussed in the article, such that its absence would make it difficult to understand the subject. See Criterion no. 8. For further information, I recommend that you take a look at Non-free content and Resolution:Licensing policy.

One reason why we try to keep our use of non-free content to a minimum is that it interferes with our purpose of building an encylopaedia which others can use, redistribute, build on, modify, and sell. There are many sites that use our content freely, in accordance with how our content is licensed (just attribution is required). But if we start allowing images where the copyright holder has given permission for "non-commercial use only", or for "use on Wikipedia only", it places a restriction on what other people can do with material that they find on Wikipedia.

So, while we're grateful when people give permission for us to use their images, if the images are not released under a free licence, we have to treat them exactly as we'd treat an image for which we had not received permission. In other words, we can only use them if we can justify their use under our non-free content criteria. And the two main questions to ask are: Would it be impossible for a Wikipedian to obtain or create a freely-licensed image? and Does this image contribute significantly to the article in helping readers to understand the subject being discussed?

I just thought I should take a few minutes to explain this to you, as otherwise you may be left wondering why your images are being deleted. Regards. ElinorD (talk) 16:08, 12 August 2007 (UTC)
