Apparently the Yamaguchi Gumi just tried to assassinate Itcho Ito, the mayor of Nagasaki:

The police told a news conference they had arrested Tetsuya Shiroo, 59, a senior member of gang affiliated with Japan's largest crime syndicate, the Yamaguchi Gumi, on suspicion of attempted murder, and confiscated a revolver he had with him.

I edited this from "famous" to "infamous" as famous has a positive connotation. Forgot to sign in when I edited. BaikinMan 16:03, 20 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Nakanishi Shin'ichi

Nakanishi Shin'ishi was killed recently in Ueno[1]. I don't quite fully follow what his relationship to the gumi was (what does 元幹部 exactly mean in terms of placement within the hierarchy?), but I think that it would be neat if someone could make use of this, either creating an article for Shinichi Nakanishi or incorporating the relevant info on this page.
