Yakushiji Motoichi

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Yakushiji Motoichi (1475-1504) was a high ranking official beneath the clan of Hosokawa throughout the mid Sengoku Period of Feudal Japan. Motoichi, also known as Yôichi, was the Deputy Governor over Settsu Province.

As the present kanrei over Hosokawa—known as Masamoto—began his initial heir succession in 1504, two candidates were chosen: Sumiyuki, Masamoto's adopted son and former legitimate heir to Kujo Masamoto, and Sumimoto, Motoichi's adopted son. Since Motoichi had detested Masamoto as a puppet of the present Ashikaga shogun, he supported Sumimoto.

When it became clear that Masamoto was unwilling to support Sumimoto as successor, Motoichi started a civil war within the Hosokawa. At the end of the short battle, Motoichi was captured and forced to commit suicide.

When Sumimoto became the kanrei shortly following the war, Motoichi became a figure of inspiration; one of his supporters subsequently assassinated Masamoto.
