[edit] Merge?

There has been suggestion that too many of Yahoo!'s services have their own pages. This is a borderline case, so please discuss at Talk:Yahoo!. - IMSoP 15:37, 22 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Oh, I think Yahoo Messenger is certainly notable in its own right. Coffee 08:59, 12 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Booters

I think maybe this article could use some an outline of the problems thats yahoo chat has like the booters and third party chat clients. -matt

[edit] Clients

There should be a 3rd-Party Client section, like at the AOL Instant Messenger article. I know they exist, but I'm not familiar.

[edit] how do i get yahoo messanger

Navigate to http://messenger.yahoo.com and click on the download button. Arundhati Bakshi 14:41, 1 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] HISTORY

THERE NEEDS TO BE A HISTORY OF YAHOO OR AT LEAST THE RELEASE DATE OF THE ORIGINAL VERSION AND IM LEANING TOWARDS 1996 —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.195.132.253 (talkcontribs) 23:19, 26 May 2006 (UTC)

I agree. There is absolutely nothing about the removal of the ability for Yahoo Users to create custom rooms. Certainly a major event, knocked out virtually all of Yahoo's dedicated roleplaying community. -Specusci —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.56.165.54 (talkcontribs) 06:58 17 June 2006 (UTC)

Yep. I'd suggest tying it into the abandon-ware Yahoo Messenger for non-windows users but I don't want to make it seem shrill. The reason why it happened is the continued tight integration with Microsoft. As a consequence of dropping Java chats, non-Windows users cannot participate in group chats. There's a business strategy at work however clumsy. Non-Windows users are not good enough to look at our ads seems to be a strange way to run a business, but so it goes.

I know that Yahoo! Messenger was created in july 1999, because it is documented in some places of the web, but I can't find no proof of it. Nyco 19:38, 20 September 2006 (UTC)

In the old days (1998-1999) messenger was called "yahoo pager". Even today some dlls on windows have pager name in them.

[edit] Details about the Mac version

This blog has some details about the history of the Mac Yahoo messenger: http://blog.megacity.org/archives/002200.php

Dunno if it's true. Just passing it along.

Interesting blog. Just thought I would put this under the same header since it applies to the Mac version: I very much disagree with the comment about 3.0b1 in this wikipedia article. It is much more different from the old 2.5.3 version. It now supports setting your status to the current iTunes song, it has avatar/display picture support, and stealth mode, all "differences in a major sense" in my opinion. In addition, the beta readme that pops up on the first launch notes that the next beta will include voice chat support. This is a major milestone for the Mac client, yet the article makes it appear to be a tiny change. The Mac client is much, much closer to being on par with the Windows client now, even if it's only a beta version.

>In addition, the beta readme that pops up on the first launch notes that the next beta will include voice chat support. This is a major milestone for the Mac client, yet the article makes it appear to be a tiny change. --A promise of coming features in software is NOT a milestone. Jeez. If it comes great, but until then it's not a milestone, it's press release. I also think that the features added are not major changes in functionality. They're nice, but hardly must have features. Ooooh, it shows my current iTunes song, great. Am I still barred from effective communication with most of the other users? Ohhhhhh--pretty avatars!

>The Mac client is much, much closer to being on par with the Windows client now, --But the Windows MSN client for Mac OS X is years behind the Windows version. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Herr von underpants (talkcontribs) 00:28, 13 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Bad link

Why do we need a link for finding invisible users? That's not even ethical!--Cloviz 17:16, 3 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] webmessenger

what happened to the web based version of yahoo messenger for people who don't or can't install the full version?220.233.197.58 08:59, 30 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Unverified Research/Claims

"Someone however can block this by selecting 'allow only messenges from people in my buddy list', but this can be an annoyance in chat rooms, although Yahoo! is working hard to resolve this issue"- this appears to be unverified research, and a citation is needed -Dbwiki148 02:47, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

I removed this sentence from the article: Surprisingly, the BBC reported on August 5 2006 that "Download Yahoo messenger" was the sixth most likely search term to return links to malware. The sentence included this reference, but that article doesn't rank those search terms in any order. 192.127.94.7 10:06, 27 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Audibles/IMVironments

Currently I don't have the time to do so, but a section on Audibles and IMVironments would be in order. Kat, Queen of Typos 00:23, 8 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] MONSTERBOOT

ALSO KNOWN AS MONSTERKILL. AS OF TODAY ON JANUARY 20TH 2007 IT IS CONFIRMED FROM MY OWN EXPERIENCE ALONG WITH EVERYONE IN THE CHATROOM BOTH FRIEND AND FOE WHO FELL VICTIM TO IT THAT THERE IS A NEW BOOTER ON YAHOO THAT DOESNT SEEM TO USE BOTS OR ADD REQUESTS OR CHATROOM INVITATIONS ECT BUT JUST BOOTS U INSTANTLY OUT OF A CHATROOM BUT THE DOESNT EXIT AND U JUST LOG OFF AND IMMEDIATELY SIGN BACK ON. IGNORING ALL USERS DOES NOT WORK AND EVERY VET USER 1999 AND LOWER IN THE ROOM WAS BOOTED EVEN THOSE WITH THE BEST OF THEIR OWN SECRET GUARDED YAHOO ANTIBOOTERS ALL FAILED. NOT EVEN THE PORN BOTS COULD STAY IN THE ROOM. IM REQUESTING ANY INFORMATION ON THIS SO WE CAN FIND SOME ANSWERS AND METHODS OF PROTECTION AGAINST IT LIKE EARLIER BOOTERS. THIS IS NOT HYPERBOLE FOR A BOOTER OF THE WEEK SLIGHTLY IMPROVED TYPE OF SHIT. IT MIGHT BE A PORT NUKER PERHAPS SOME USERS BELIEVE. IF WE CANT FIND A WAY TO STOP THIS BOOTER IT COULD VERY WELL BE A BIGGER CHANGE THAN THE REMOVAL OF THE USERROOMS IF ITS HERE TO STAY AND YAHOO FAILS TO STEP UP AND PATCH UP LIKE THEY FAILED TO WITH VOICE LAGERS YAHOO CHAT WILL HAVE NO FUTURE

[edit] 90% OF YAHOO CHAT IS PORNBOTS

Not even a mention of the infinite bots that exist in the chat rooms?

The many lawsuits that revolved around minors being sexually harassed or meeting up with strangers? webcams of minors, plenty of adults exposing themselves to underage kids.

To catch a predator? hellllloooo all the predators used yahoo.

Bot and sexual predators

This is not correct ..We use this service and we should not blame it..

Joe

What do you mean not correct? Check it, I use the service all the time, blame?

I had a porn bot contact me. I looked up the whois on the web site and then I went to anywho.com and did a reverse lookup and pretended to be the police. I was like you are solicitating porno to my 12-year old son. I told him that solicitating sex to minors is a serious crime which you can to prison for. I am pretty sure he disbanded cybergirls.
eternalsleeper

Not sure when, but Yahoo has an additional logon criteria added. This is to verify that you are indeed, human. An aberrated picture of some combination of letters/numbers now appears as part of the Yahoo chat room logon process. This has helped a lot to keep the flies/pornbots way down.

[edit] Vendor lock-in?

Do you think Yahoo messenger contributes to Vendor lock-in? Would it help to have a category identifying Category:Non-interoperable systems? The issue is being voted on, please contribute your vote / opinion: here. Pgr94 23:27, 7 February 2007 (UTC)

Nope because it comunicates with the MSN chat system too —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.121.74.148 (talk) 21:30, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

Are there any available numbers on how many people use Yahoo messenger?--Crossmr 17:56, 6 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:Yahoo! Messenger.gif

Image:Yahoo! Messenger.gif is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

[edit] THE GREAT YAHOO ROOM MISDIRECT OF AUGUST 20TH

ON AUGUST 20TH YAHOO, AND THIS MAY HAVE SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE ALPHA SERVERS, IM NOT SURE, WOULD MISDIRECT YOU TO A RANDOM ROOM, OR RATHER THE NEXT AVAILABLE ROOM THAT ISNT FULL, WHEN YOU SELECTED A SPECIFIC 1. FOR EXAMPLE, IF YOU PICK 'XBOX: 1' YOU CAN INSTEAD BE DIRECTED TO 'XBOX: 8', SIMILAR TO WHEN YOU JUST CLICK ON 'XBOX' DONT SELECT THE SUBCATEGORIES. FURTHERMORE, MOST OF YAHOO DISPLAYS ITS ALMOST ALL OF ITS ROOMS, OR AT LEAST ITS MOST POPULAR AND EVEN MEDIOCRE ROOMS WITH USUALLY 5 OR 10 ROOMS IN THAT CATEGORY, AS MAXED OUT TO FULL CAPACITY (50 USERS A ROOM, 100 ROOMS TOTAL), WHERE PORN PORN BOTS FILL UP A MAJORITY OF THE ROOMS. THIS HAPPENED ALONG WITH THE ROOM MISDIRECT EITHER BECAUSE EVERYBODY LEFT IN DISGUST AFTERWARDS AND THE BOTS TOOK THE MAJORITY OVER THE PEOPLE, OR THERE WAS A GLITCH IN PROGRAMING, OR THE BOTS CREATOR SET ITS PROGRAM INTO OVERDRIVE COINCIDENTALLY AROUND THE SAME TIME OR IN REBELLION AGAINST YAHOO FOR THE FIRST REASONS MENTIONED BECAUSE THEY DIDNT LIKE IT OR ITS DRIVING THEIR CUSTOMERS AWAY BECAUSE THE PEOPLE WHO USUALLY CLICK THEIR ADS ARE LOGGING OFF IN DISGUST AT THESE NEW CHANGES, HAD ITS ROOMS FILLED UP TO FULL CAPACITY WITH BOTS. I WAS HOPING IT WOULD GO AWAY AFTER A DAY OR YAZAK YAHELITE OR YTUNNEL WOULD FIND TO GO AROUND THAT. BUT FOR THE PAST 3 DAYS I HAVE BEEN HAVING RUDE AWAKENINGS. UNFORTUNATELY. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 24.188.17.249 (talk) 00:36, August 24, 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Yahoo Messenger Chat

I dunno if/where I can add this in the article, but it should be noted that chat has indeed gotten way out of hand. My only reference so far is my own experience, and the official blog listed here, as well as here. This is basically a plea by Chet Simpson, the creator or ytunnel begging for improvements in its chat rooms. --Ben414 02:23, 27 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Significance of yahoomessenger.exe

I cannot think of a reason why the main process of the program is mentioned. As such, I suggest that it be removed from the article.Rayor of Dominaria 04:16, 17 September 2007 (UTC)
