English: Head and horns of a male Nubian Ibex in Eilat, Israel. The Nubian Ibex is a rocky desert dwelling goat antelope found in mountainous areas of Israel, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Egypt and Sudan. Nubian Ibex have long thin horns. In males they extend up and then backwards and down and reach around a metre in length. The horns set the males social position, while in females they are strait and much smaller (around 30 cm) and serve for protection.

היעלים שייכים למשפחת הפריים, מסדרת מכפילי פרסה. אלה בעלי חיים מוצקים, שריריים ובעלי רגליים קצרות וחזקות. הם נפוצים באירופה, באסיה ובמזרח אפריקה. בישראל נפוצים היעלים באזורים מדבריים ובנאות מדבר - במדבר יהודה, בנגב, בערבה ובאילת. אורך גופו של היעל 100-125 ס"מ ומשקלו בין 45 ל-80 ק"ג. קרני הנקבה קצרות (כ 30 ס"מ), וישרות ונועדו לתקוף טורפים. אורך קרניים אצל הזכר הוא עד 130 ס"מ והן מתעגלות לאחור. היעלים חיים לרוב בעדרים נפרדים של נקבות וזכרים בעלי היררכיה ברורה. קרני היעלים משמשות לקביעת דירוג חברתי - כוחו ומעמדו החברתי של זכר נקבעים על פי גודל קרניו. בתקופת הייחום יש לזכר המיוחם פרוות חורף כהה וגרבי פרווה כהים לרגליו ושרירי צווארו מתעבים. על מנת לשפר את מעמדו בקבוצה הוא נלחם בזכרים אחרים על ידי הצמדת הראשים וסיקול הקרניים צמוד לבסיסן.

בשנות ה-50 הופסק ציד היעלים בארץ, הם הוכרזו כבעלי חיים מוגנים ואוכלוסייתם התאוששה.
