Xystos

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Xystos was the gymnasium in which Ancient Greek athletes trained before the Olympic Games.[1] It was a covered colonnade, affording protection from the sun and rain, where prospective competitors would often be coached by past winners of their events. The Xystos gradually evolved to encompass other activities, notably education and often featured a walled arena planted with trees.[2]
