Wynyard is a town in eastern Saskatchewan, Canada, 132 km west of Yorkton and 260 km east of Saskatoon. [2] Wynyard is a part of the rural municipality of Big Quill No. 308. Many of the early settlers to the area around Big Quill Lake were of Icelandic origin, and the ethnic bloc settlement area was called The Vatnabyggd settlement. Sleipnir a store and post office was located at NE-30-22-15 and was the center of community life of the Vatnabyggd settlement until it was moved into Wynyard in 1908. [3]

Frank Cameron Museum provides local historical artifacts as well as tourism information and is located in Wynyard.[5] Wynyard Regional Park is the local camping site and is 2 km or 1 mi from Wynyard. Wynyard is located just to the south of Big Quill Lake which is the largest saline lake in the country of Canada.[5] Mud Lake Wildlife Refuge is within 19 km or 12 mi.[2]

Wynyard plays host to many activities and groups such as Wynyard Air Cadets, Wynyard Blues, Wynyard Elementary School, Wynyard Fireman's Association, Wynyard Golf Club with a local 9 hole golf course, Wynyard High School, Wynyard Hole in One Tournament, Wynyard Kinettes, Wynyard Kinsmen, Wynyard Ladies Night Golf, Wynyard Legion, Wynyard Men's Night Golf, Wynyard Minor Ball, Wynyard Minor Hockey,Wynyard School of Dance, Wynyard Stingrays Synchronized Swimming Team, Wynyard Senior Appreciation Days, Wynyard Senior Centre, Wynyard Shriners, and the Wynyard Swimming Pool. The local news is reported in the Wynyard Advance Gazette. [7] Television channel stations which reach Yorkton are CBC, CTV as well as all Yorkton channels. [5]
[edit] Transportation
Wynyard is located on Saskatchewan Highway 16. Wynyard was made a divisional point on the Canadian Pacific Railway when it came through. Wynyard Airstrip and greyhound buses also facilitate transportation in and out of Wynyard and area. [5]

The one room school house of the early 1900's was called Wynyard School District # 2499 and Nordra school # 1947. [8] The latter offered a course in Icelandic when it was first constructed in 1907 as the early school administration allowed an hour each day from 3 pm to 4 pm for foreign language instruction. [3] Currently there are several venues for education in Wynyard. The town offers the Wynyard Elementary School and Wynyard Composite High School. [5]

The Town of Wynyard has three sport teams. The Wynyard Blues play baseball. The Wynyard Monarchs play hockey in the HHL (highway hockey league). The High school has the Wynyard Golden Bears which play basketball, football, volleyball, and soccer. The high school also participates in individual sports like cross country, track, and badminton.
