Wuerffel Trophy

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Wuerffel Trophy is an award given annually by the All Sports Association of Fort Walton Beach to the college football player "who best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement."[1] It is named for Heisman trophy winner Danny Wuerffel, a former college player at the University of Florida and in the NFL who graduated from Fort Walton Beach High School. While being a great college quarterback, Wuerffel is also remembered for his work off the field—including running Desire Street Ministries, a faith-based organization for underprivileged kids in New Orleans.

Joel Penton of Ohio State University is the 2006 winner of the award. Joel is active in FCA, Athletes in Action and Campus Crusade for Christ, volunteering time to local high school chapters.

The first winner of the trophy was Rudy Niswanger of LSU in 2005, also a winner of the Draddy Trophy.
