Wu Zuoren

Wu Zuoren (Chinese: 吴作人; 1908 - 1997) was a famous contemporary Chinese painter. A native Jing County, Anhui, he was born in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province. He excelled in both Chinese painting and oil painting.

In 1927, he studied in department of fine arts at Shanghai Art University, and his ability was recognized by Xu Beihong. Later, he transferred to department of fine arts at Nanguo Academy of Arts. In 1928, he followed Xu Beihong and studies at department of arts at National Central University (renamed Nanjing University in 1949). In 1930, he went abroad and studied in Europe until 1935 when he returned to homeland. He became a professor and the first provost of China Central Academy of Fine Arts. He was later promoted to vice principal, principal and honorary principal of that school.

He was a member of central committee of China Democratic League, the Chairman of Chinese Artists Association, and a member of standing committee of National People's Congress.

He founded and invested the commonweal organization, "Wu Zuoren International Foundation of Fine Arts".

He died in 1997 in Beijing.

His wife, Xiao Shufang, was also an artist. His first wife, Li Na, a Belgian national, died at early age in 1939 when they were at Central University, due to postpartum debilitation, and suffering caused by bombardment in Chongqing by Japanese planes.
