[edit] We Tow and Repair ?
I was somewhat surprised that this article stated that th e call letters refer to "activities at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard...'We Tow And Repair'". As a 47 year resident of Virginia Beach and now Chesapeake, I have always understood the call letters to refer to the Tidewater Area, just as WAVY alludes to the ocean, WVEC - the Virginia East Coast (or Eastern Carolina), and WHRO to Hampton Roads.
I took a look at the history of the article and see that the change was likely made by user RealDeal4u, who (cased on other ciontributions) in real life is likely either former WAVY news reporter/anchor Dianna Morgan or fan. WTAR TV (now TWKR) is of course a competator. I also search for other references to "Tow And Repair" and can find nothing outside of the automotive towing industry. I think it unlikely that this was a motto, slogan, or a popular description of Norfolk Naval Shipyard. In early marketing materials for WTAR radio (see [1]) There are many references to Tidewater, but none to Norfolk naval Shipyard.
I suspect the "Tow And Repair" reference was a prank that has been allowed to stay way longer than it should have. I suggest we remove the reference the "Tow And Repair" reference.
