[edit] Usage
The {{WPFC}} project banner template should be added (not subst:ed) to the talk page of every article within the scope of the Former Countries WikiProject. While the template does not require any additional parameters, it has a number of optional ones that add various extra features to the banner. The full syntax is as follows:

General parameters:
- small – "yes" if the banner should be rendered in its miniature size; this should be used sparingly and only on crowded talk pages for the time being.
- nested – "yes" if the banner is being used in conjunction with {{WikiProjectBannerShell}}.
- class – a rating of the article's quality; see the assessment department for more details.Valid values are:
- FA - The article has reached Featured article status.
- A - Could be submitted as a Featured article candidate; probably could use some small updates to make it Featured quality.
- GA - The article has reached Good article status.
- B - Could be submitted as a Good article nominee; probably could use some updates or may lack some features from the Good article criteria, but it presents a good overview of the subject (see subsection for B-class grading).
- Start - The article is more than a stub, but may lack some important aspects of the topic's discussion.
- Stub - The article is a stub; it likely contains one of the former countries stub templates.
- Needed - The article does not yet exist but has been identified as a subject that should be covered OR the article is currently just a redirect.
- NA - The page is not an article and should not be rated. This class has a number of sub-categories:
- Cat - Category
- Dab - Disambiguation
- Structure - Categories formed by WPFC infoboxes
- Template - Templates such as infoboxes and navbars
- List - Pages containing only a list of some sort
- A-Class – indicates the status of the article's A-Class review, if any; see the assessment department for more details.
- peer-review – "yes" if the article is currently listed for peer review by the project; see the assessment department for more details.
- old-peer-review – "yes" if the article was previously listed for peer review by the project; see the assessment department for more details.
- attention – "yes" if the article requires immediate attention; see Category:Military history articles needing attention for more details on when this should be used.
- Needed features:
- structureneeded - The article requires restructuring; adds articles to Category:Former country articles requiring restructuring
- infoboxneeded - The article requires an infobox; adds articles to Category:Former country articles without infoboxes
- flagneeded - The article needs a flag; adds articles to Category:Heraldry and vexillology articles needing images and Category:Former country articles requiring a flag.

B-Class checklist (available only for articles rated as "Stub-Class", "Start-Class", or "B-Class"—see the assessment department for more details):
- B-Class-1 – "yes" if the article meets criterion #1 for B-Class status; "no" if it does not.
- B-Class-2 – "yes" if the article meets criterion #2 for B-Class status; "no" if it does not.
- B-Class-3 – "yes" if the article meets criterion #3 for B-Class status; "no" if it does not.
- B-Class-4 – "yes" if the article meets criterion #4 for B-Class status; "no" if it does not.
- B-Class-5 – "yes" if the article meets criterion #5 for B-Class status; "no" if it does not.
Portals:
- portalX-name – if the article has been selected for use on a portal, the name of that portal. The name should be given without any formatting or namespace prefixes; thus, Portal:India is given as "|portal1-name=India". Up to five different portals may be specified, via the parameters portal1-name through portal5-name.
- portalX-link – the portal subpage location where the article may be found on the corresponding portal. This should be given as a pure unlinked subpage name; thus, Portal:India/Selected article/34 is given as "|portal1-link=Selected article/34".
Task forces and other supported WikiProjects:
- Prussia – "yes" if the article is supported by WikiProject Prussia.
- HRE-taskforce – "yes" if the article is supported by the Holy Roman Empire task force.
- GOV-taskforce – "yes" if the article is supported by the Extraordinary Governments task force.
To avoid needlessly cluttering up talk pages, it is usually appropriate to remove any unused parameters from the template.
[edit] Credit where it is due
This template is now largely based on the excellent {{WPMILHIST}} banner.
