[edit] Club History
The club was originally started back in the early 80's. The location of the meetings changed many times over the years and one of the earliest locations was the St Clair College, where the meetings were held on a monthly basis. The meetings at that time comprised of a main monthly demonstration or topic, after which followed the disk of the month talk. This disk could be purchased from a very large, hand made, well crafted wooden suitcase-like box which contained the clubs library, mostly on 5¼ inch disks. The Club still has this box today as part of its history.
After that the members broke up into smaller groups that were called "special interest groups" (SIG’s). Examples of these are the ones for Lotus 123, Microsoft Windows, Dos, Word Perfect, etc, where they concentrated more on that focus. The club also produced a monthly newsletter called the TXT, in reference to text files that were saved as "name.txt".
In the early days of the club, like many others, one of the biggest things to come along was the start up of local BBS‘s. You could connect your computer and your 300 or 1200 baud modem to someone in the local area and chat, download or upload programs and not have to make a long distance phone call. Back then the internet for public use as was not available to the home users.
Over the years the club has had many guest speakers, such as representatives from Microsoft, Word Perfect, and others. The largest meeting occurred the night a representative from Corel come to the Caboto Club to demonstrate the new Corel Draw Version 5. There was approximately 225 people showed up, the hall was full and the meeting was a big success. At that time it was fairly easy to get a big name software company to come out to meeting and, of course, bring a lot of free sample. That is not the case today and it can be hard to even get a person to talk to.
In the 90's the meetings were held at the Caboto Club and by 2000 had moved to the Windsor Credit Union. For many people the WPCUG was their first introduction to PC's. Over the years the club has provided a service to the PC's users of Windsor by allowing for the free exchange of information.
