Justin Trevor Woodson (born February 13, 1970, on the White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico) is a Major in the United States Army and is an astronaut hopeful. He is currently a faculty member in the Department of Military and Emergency Medicine at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) in Bethesda, MD. MAJ Woodson is a Flight Surgeon and a Dive Medical Officer (DMO) and is Board Certified in Aerospace Medicine. MAJ Woodson's primary career emphasis has been in applied operational medicine in unusual environments and he enjoys a diverse training background and series of personal pursuits that suits his passion for new experience and hands-on discovery.

Dr. Woodson received a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in biology from the University of Houston in 1992, where he was Distinguished Military Graduate of the US Army ROTC program there. He graduated from medical school with a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) in 1997 and a Master in Public Health (M.P.H.) from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, TX in 2001. He later completed training in Aerospace Medicine at the Naval Aeromedical Institute at NAS Pensacola, FL.

Dr. Woodson holds a faculty appointment as Clinical Assistant Professor, Department of Preventive Medicine and Community Health at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in Galveston, TX and a pending appointment within the Department of Military and Emergency Medicine at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) in Bethesda, MD.

Major Woodson enlisted in the United Stated Army Reserve in Houston, Tx in 1990. He completed basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, MO and was assigned to the 4005th US Army Hospital (USAR), serving as Platoon Leader and Company Executive Officer while completing his undergraduate education at the University of Houston. He simultaneously entered the senior ROTC program at the University of Houston and was selected as Distinguished Military Graduate and awarded the Houston Battalion Sabre as the top performing cadet. Graduating in 1992, he entered active duty and was commisioned as Second Lieutenant in the Medical Service Corps while attending medical school and subsequently was re-commissioned Captain in the Medical Corps after completion of medical school in 1997. Following medical school, he proceeded to Fort Bragg, NC where he completed internship training in Family Medicine at Womack Army Medical Center and took a follow on assignment as Battalion Surgeon for 2/7th Special Forces Group (abn) where he gained extensive operational experience through several deployments in Operations Other Than War throughout Latin America and served as Jumpmaster and Diving Medical Officer in addition to his aviation medicine duties. Then CPT Woodson served as informal Flight Surgeon to the US Army Parachute Team (Golden Knights) and gained extensive flight experience with the US Air Force 41st Airlift Squadron at Pope AFB. With his interest in operational assignments and extreme environments solidified, he applied for the Residency Program in Aerospace Medicine which took him to Galveston, Tx where he completed a Masters in Public Health at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) and then on to the Naval Aerospace Medicine Institute (NAMI) in Pensacola, Fl. He was then selected to train Flight Surgeons at the US Army School of Aviation Medicine (USASAM) at the US Army Aviation Center, Fort Rucker, Al. After his first year there, he was placed in charge of all aeromedical education for the US Army as Director of Education for USASAM, supervising the development of Flight Surgeon, Flight Medic, MEDEVAC doctrine, Enroute Care, and Aeromedical Psychology courses. Here he also served as Physiology Training Officer (PTO) for the Army's only altitude chamber and as FORSCOM Aviation Resource Mangement Survey(ARMS) Inspector. While at USASAM, he also engineered the Medicine in Challenging Environments (MICE) conference, a joint venture with UTMB serving physcians of NASA, the US Navy, US Coast Guard, US Army, and others working in unusual environments. In 2006, MAJ Woodson deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom as command surgeon with Task Force ODIN, a special missions unit employing fixed wing and Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) assets in the counter-IED fight in Iraq. After this deployment, he returned to a joint DoD teaching post at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences where he currently serves as faculty member in the Department of Military and Emergency Medicine. Here he is involved in preparing young medical students for operational assignments in all branches of the Department of Defense and Public Health Service and completing medical research in areas of operational interest to the US Army and the Department of Defense.

Major Woodson's military training includes: NASA/DoD Medical Support (DDMS)-Space Operations Medical Support course, Naval Aviation Safety Officer Course, USAF Global Medicine Course, Advanced Clinical Concepts in Aeromedical Evacuation, Naval Aviation Instructor Training Course, Naval Flight Surgeon Course and Student NFS Flight Training, Navy Aviation Preflight Indoctrination- NFO, Special Operations Jumpmaster Course, US Navy Diving Medical Officer Course, Army Flight Surgeon Primary Course, Preventive Medicine Program Planning Management Course (6A-F6), Medical Management of Chemical & Biological Casualties, AMEDD Officer Advanced Course, AMEDD Officer Basic Course, Airborne Course, Nuclear, Biological and Chemical(NBC) Defense Course.

MAJ Woodson is married to Maria (Welch) from North Carolina, born in Vicenza, Italy and has two children: Sophia (Sept 15, 2003) and Sabrina (Dec 14, 2006). His interests include cycling, distance running, swimming, triathlon, SCUBA diving, climbing, skydiving, flying, power kiting, kiteboarding, backpacking, bicycle mechanics, chess, woodworking, music (bass guitar), poetry, good wine, and all things European.
