A Buddhist Patriarch is a leader of Buddhism like catholic pope, but in Buddhism, a Pope is not elected by voting. Rather, the Buddhist Patriarch is someone who has achieved the status of Buddha.
In Buddhism, a Buddha (Sanskrit बुद्ध) is any being that has become fully awakened, otherwise known as enlightened. Someone who has become enlightened has permanently overcome greed, hate, and ignorance, and has achieved complete liberation from suffering.
In the Pali Canon, the term 'Buddha' refers to anyone who has become enlightened (i.e., awakened to the truth, or Dharma) on their own, without a teacher to point out the Dharma, in a time when the teachings of the Four Noble Truths or of the Eightfold Path do not exist in the world for the student to learn from.
Who knows when a person reaches the state of Buddha? The Master who trained the student. How could you understand how close you are to reaching Enlightenment? Through the koan. If a student solves every koan, the Master confirms and the student becomes an heir Patriarch.
Shakyamuni said to Mahakasyapa directly. "You are Buddha. you become fully awakened". Mahakasyapa said to Ananda directly. "You are Buddha. You have become fully awakened"...Ko-Bong said to Seung-Sahn directly. "You are Buddha. You have become fully awakened".
If you want to ask about Catholic issues or other problems to Jesus, you can't because a living Jesus is not here. However, If you have questions about Buddhism or other problems to Shakyamuni, you can because a living Buddha is here. That is the most important difference between the Buddhist and Catholic religions.
This is the Zen Buddhism tradition.

- 1. Mahakasyapa
- According to the legendary history of the Chan and Zen schools, Mahākāśyapa received the Dharma directly from Buddha at the flower sermon on Vulture Peak, where Buddha silently held a flower before his students. A monk named Kāśyapa smiled. The Buddha remarked that Kāśyapa alone of all his students had received his teaching for that day, and should thereafter be known as Mahākāśyapa.
