WKDD FM 98.1 is a radio station serving the Akron, Ohio metro area (though it is technically licensed to Canton). It is owned by Clear Channel Communications.
WKDD has a hot adult contemporary format, headlined by longtime morning drive host Matt Patrick. Patrick preceded WKDD's launch by two years, he joined the station when it was still WCUE 96.5 FM, the FM sister station to WCUE 1150 AM.
WKDD had long been at 96.5 until the "Great Frequency Swap" of 2001, in which many Cleveland and Akron stations switched frequencies and/or call letters. 96.5 is now WAKS (96-5 KISS FM), and while still licensed to Akron, has moved its tower to Brecksville, Ohio in an attempt to serve the Cleveland market.
98.1 was formerly WHK-FM, and earlier WTOF-FM, serving Canton. It is now officially WKDD 98.1 serving both Akron and Canton. As WAKS did at WKDD's old home frequency, WKDD moved its 98.1 FM tower location to Hartville, Ohio, in an attempt to better serve the Akron market.
Sister stations in the Clear Channel Akron/Canton group include WARF-AM and WHLO-AM, both licensed to Akron, Canton station WRQK, and North Canton station WHOF.
Starting April 28, 2008, morning host Patrick also hosts a late-afternoon local issues talk program on WHLO.
[edit] Have a Heart, Do Your Part Radiothon
Each February since 2000, WKDD teams up with Akron Children's Hospital for the "Have a Heart, Do Your Part Radiothon" to benefit the hospital. Radiothon airs live on WKDD all weekend long, hosted by morning hosts Matt Patrick and Angela. Radiothon 2007 took place February 9-11, 2007 and raised $858,376.98. Radiothon 2008 took place February 8-10, 2008 and raised $1,000,726. Radiothon airs 5:30am-9pm Friday and 7am-9pm Saturday and Sunday.
[edit] Syndicated Programming
WKDD airs the syndicated American Top 40 with Ryan Seacrest every Sunday morning from 8am-Noon, as well as the Rick Dees Weekly Top 40 every Sunday night from 8pm-Midnight. WKDD also aired American Top 20 with Casey Kasem for several years before airing AT40 with Ryan Seacrest.
