[edit] GPL violation
"If the device OS is Linux, and the source code has not been released, this may qualify as a GPL violation."
It's not a GPL violation if the binary file (i.e. the media player) is not distributed to anyone. Only those who get a copy of the binary file has the right to demand the source code. If you use/develop GPL-code inhouse, you don't have to give the code to anyone. If they start selling the device - and it contains GPL-code - then they will have to realease the source code.
