Winter vacation has been proposed^[who?] in modern times (the 20th and 21st centuries) as an alternative to summer vacation in areas that have harsh winters and mild summers. Winter vacation would allow economical savings from not having to provide heat to school buildings during the winter, as well as allowing the students to travel to warmer areas.

Conversely, since Winter vacation eliminates the summer vacation, children may miss opportunities to play(go to summer camps or participate in outdoor sports) in the summer when the weather is more enjoyable.
